As the PSL moves on from the halfway stage towards the qualifiers, an intriguing duel between awaits us.
There’s nothing to distinguish between the two teams on the overall head to head, which reads 9-9 at the moment. The most recent five encounters have been close contests, with Islamabad United slightly leading 3-2.
Interestingly, the style of cricket these two teams have played so far are quite similar too. Top order batsmen have done the bulk of the scoring for both teams, making up for the poor returns of the middle and lower order batsmen. Both teams have several issues to straighten out with the ball though, with slow bowling being Islamabad United’s Achilles heel and pace Quetta Gladiator’s.
As with any close contest, it’s tough to predict the winner. But it all comes down to which team performs better on the day, shows great adaptability to the conditions, and puts pressure on the opposition.

Batting-wise, Islamabad United has not been very consistent in the tournament so far.
They’re riding on the performances of two in-form batters namely Colin Munro and Agha Salman, who have managed to score two fifties in five matches. However, the others haven't been able to find their footing yet. Shadab Khan and Azam Khan showed us a glimpse of how destructive they can be with the bat but None of the other batters have made useful contribution to the total, and that includes the likes of Alex Hales and Jordan Cox etc. Bowling all-rounders Imad Wasim and Faheem Ashraf haven’t had any impact with the bat yet, managing just 10 and 22 runs respectively from 5 games.
Islamabad’s middle order and lower order should start scoring runs consistently or else making it through to playoffs might be difficult. Bowling-wise, they’ve been pretty ordinary. Naseem Shah and Shadab Khan have 13 scalps between them, but the rest of the attack which includes Tymal Mills, Imad Wasim, and Agha Salman haven’t been able to trouble the opposition. Currently placed fourth on the table, Islamabad United are level on points with Karachi Kings. But they may find sliding down to the bottom of the table very soon, if they don’t regroup and take the field with some new plans and fresh players perhaps.
Alex Hales, Colin Munro, Agha Salman, Shadab Khan (c), Azam Khan (wk), Jordan Cox, Imad Wasim, Faheem Ashraf, Naseem Shah, Hunain Shah, Rumman Raees.
Jason Roy, back at his destructive best, leads the charge with the bat for the Quetta Gladiators. His 200 runs have come from 5 innings, and he has scored them at 150 SR. Saud Shakeel has been a rock, scoring runs consistently at a decent average of 32 and at an impressive clip just like his English counterpart — 1.5 runs per ball. Rilee Rossouw has been ordinary, with 102 runs from 5 matches. But Sarfaraz Khan is on the leanest of patches he has had as a batsman, having crossed double digits only once.
Thankfully, Sherfane Rutherford has stood up; he set the stage on fire with a quickfire 58* that saw them get over the line against Kings on the last ball of the innings. There’s not much to write about how the Gladiators’ pacers have fared so far. Mohd. Amir and Mohd. Wasim have just managed 10 wickets between them and have found it hard to tighten the screws or run through the opposition.
But their spinners are in excellent form, perhaps compensating for the poor form shown by the pacers. Abrar Ahmed and Akeal Hosein have ed for 10 and 8 scalps respectively, with the local offie Usman Tariq picking up 2 wickets in the encounter against Karachi Kings. If there was something that team Quetta had to work on, it would certainly be their pace bowling.

The weather forecast is not encouraging with some rain predicted for the night. Overnight showers and rainy weather means moisture might be trapped in the wicket, so both teams will do well to factor in how this will change the way the wicket plays. Historically, this deck has been favourable to batters with 200 being breached 12 times in a single season last year.

Average TurnThis fixture will be played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Team Islamabad and Team Quetta have won one apiece in their two encounters at this venue.
Teams clearly like to chase here, and it’s no surprise. Last season, of the 11 matches played here, 8 were won by the team chasing. We expect the team winning the toss to ask the opposition to bat first. Besides, it’s likely to rain. So, teams would choose to play it safe by choosing to chase.
Quetta Gladiators are in good nick and have shown great composure to win matches by taking the game deep right down to the last ball. Islamabad United have been far from convincing and have looked good in patches. Our money is on Quetta Gladiators for this game.
We are backing Quetta Gladiators to win this match.
