At the halfway stage of the tournament, Durban’s Super Giants are placed second on the ladder and the MI Cape Town are not too far away at fourth.
Having lost their last two encounters, the Super Giants are in a bit of a bind now.The MI batsmen are not too confident at the moment either, as they were clearly exposed on a low and slow track at Paarl. Both the teams have a lot to get right, more so MI Cape Town, who’re faced with the prospect of winning at least 3 matches in the second half of this tournament to increase their likelihood of qualifying through to the final playoffs.
They’ll be wary of the Durban’s Super Giants though, a team they haven’t had the pleasure of defeating in three encounters so far. In both the matches last season, the team from Durban never looked in trouble chasing the target set by MI Cape Town. In their previous encounter 10 days ago, they successfully defended their total to clinch a close 11 run win in a rain-affected game.

A so-so campaign so far has MI Cape Town placed fourth on the ladder at the halfway stage of the tournament, with 2 wins from 5 matches. They managed to win one of those clashes with a bonus point, as well. But, a very narrow loss against the current winners Eastern Cape at home was too hard to come to with.
Swashbuckling opener Ryan Rickleton brought up another 50 in quick time and Rassie Van Der Dussen provided good in their bid to chase 203, but the other batsmen couldn’t carry on with the swift run scoring. Late cameos from Sam Curran and Kieron Pollard got them to a striking distance from the target, but the Eastern Cape bowler Ottniel Baartman successfully defended 15 off the last over, despite offering up a six in the first ball.
Narrow losses are hard to recover from, but the MI Cape Town men did so in style with a convincing victory over current table-toppers Paarl Royals at home. However, they couldn’t double up when they travelled to Boland Park for the reverse fixture where the track was low and slow, much to the disappointment of the MI batters who prefer wickets where the ball comes on to the bat nicely. Chasing 160-odd runs, they huffed and puffed their way to 103 runs and were bowled out with 10 balls to spare, losing by a huge 59-run margin. They’d be hoping to put on a consistent display with the bat and ball in the second half to have a shot at making it to the finals.

Notching up three consecutive wins in their first three matches gave them a brilliant head-start. They were going to be hard to catch, but after two back to back losses against lower-ranked teams, they’re now keen to turn things around.
The upset loss to the bottom-ranked Capitals, in particular, would be a hard pill to swallow for the Super Giants. The DSG bowlers allowed the Capitals to get up to over 200 a total that they were never looked like achieving during their chase.
Another loss followed in their home encounter against Eastern Cape, with the defending champs getting over the line with 4 balls to spare. Wiaan Mulder staged a recovery act after the DSG were reduced to 5/90 in 12.4 overs. He put on a valuable partnership with Dwaine Pretorius taking his team to a decent total--159 runs. In defence, the DSG bowlers bowled to plan and made a good fist of it removing half the Eastern Cape side inside 15 overs with still 63 to get. But their bowlers couldn’t keep the pressure sustained and the lower middle order of the Eastern Cape got away with it. Noor Ahmad was off color and Naveen Ul Haq couldn’t execute his death bowling skills as well as he’d have liked.
A complete game is what they need so they should regroup and figure out how they can execute their skills with the ball and bat.

The wicket here turns into a good batting strip as the tournament progresses, and we saw a glimpse the other night when MI Cape Town broke no sweat chasing a challenging 175 runs in less than 17 overs. The forecast looks great with no chance for rain.
The match is going to be played at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. All the three wins of MI Cape Town at this venue have come while chasing.
Historically, the Newlands Stadium has proven to be a good venue for chasing. Whichever team wins the toss tomorrow will most likely choose to put the opposition in to have a bat first.
Both MI Cape Town and Sunrisers Eastern Cape would be hoping to put in strong performances going into the second half. But we think Durban’s Super Giants will get their rhythm back and be too hot to stop for MI Cape Town.
We are backing Durban’s Super Giants as the winners of this contest.
