Hobart Hurricanes beat Melbourne Stars by 7 runs
Melbourne Stars were too good for Hobart Hurricanes in the rain-affected match at Hobart, winning by 7 wickets and 3 balls to spare. We expect the Stars to dominate proceedings in the reverse fixture at home, too.
We are backing Melbourne Stars as the winners of this contest.

Melbourne Stars have a chance to sneak through to qualifiers with a win in their final match; however, their BBL13 campaign may as well be over, some 20 hours before their encounter with the Hurricanes kicks off if Adelaide Strikers go on to win against the Sydney Thunder on Sunday night. The Hurricanes’ season is over.
With 3 losses in 3 games, they get one more opportunity to finish this season with a win and improve their standing on the table, where they’re placed 6th sandwiched between the two teams from Melbourne.
The Hurricanes don’t have a good record against the Stars, with 7 wins and 13 losses in 20 encounters, but they will be more than happy to be party-poopers this time as a win in Melbourne on Monday night puts an end to the Stars’ campaign.

Melbourne Stars lost the derby with the Renegades, and are in a bit of a bother now. No Stars batsmen looked in firm control to put the foot down and accelerate against the Renegades, despite four of them ing 20 in their innings. Off to a flying start with 21 in the first two overs, Stars lost Dan Lawrence. 16 was all they could eke out in the next three overs before the other opener Thomas Rogers was sent back to pavilion. Glenn Maxwell was brilliant in his short stay, Marcus Stoinis never got going, and Beau Webster made a scratchy 29 from 34 balls.
They knocked over outgoing batsman Aaron Finch for a duck, but Shaun Marsh and Jake Fraser McGurk combined for a 60-odd partnership, rendering the Stars bowlers ineffective on a slightly trickier pitch. Shaun Marsh carried his bat through and made sure the Renegades gave a fitting farewell for Finchy, the BBL legend. This meek loss to the Renegades will hurt the Stars and their chances of qualifying as the fourth team.
For them to go through, they should now overcome the Hurricanes challenge in their last match and hope that the Adelaide Strikers somehow lose their final fixture to an out of form Sydney Thunder on Sunday night in Canberra. The Strikers, who’re also eyeing a fourth spot finish, have managed just about the same number of wins as the Stars so far, but are slightly ahead on the points tally with 9 points thanks to them splitting points with Heat early on.

Hobart Hurricanes’ fortunes nosedived after a tense 1-run defeat to Heat in a rain marred encounter down in Hobart. An inspiring 95 from Ben McDermott went in vain at the Adelaide Oval, as Strikers romped home for a 5-wicket victory. And a scintillating innings from southpaw Jake Weatherald, who came in as substitute for Chris Lynn, laid waste to their hopes of winning the reverse fixture at Hobart.
Lack of form of key players like Matthew Wade, Tim David, and Corey Anderson, and inconsistent performances with both bat and ball from several players have been the highlight of a patchy season for Hobart Hurricanes. Nathan Ellis’ decision making as captain hasn’t been effective, and it has left many wondering why the team think tank didn’t look elsewhere with experienced campaigners in Matthew Wade still part of the XI.
But it’s a new day and they will hope to start fresh and put their best foot forward for winning the game at the G. A win in the final fixture will not only give their fans something to cheer about, but will also help them finish with 8 points, well clear of the bottom-dwellers in the table.

The weather forecast is for scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon so a shower or two cannot be ruled out as the match goes on. The pitch here during this time of the year provides plenty of assistance to batsmen so this might turn out to be a run fest.
The match is being played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, two years ago in BBl11, went berserk and took Hobart Hurricanes apart belting boundaries. The Stars scored 273/2, which still remains the highest total by any team in BBL.
Melbourne Stars have squandered many chances to put a daunting total on board when sent in to bat. And, all of their four wins have come while chasing. They won’t think twice to choose to bat second should they win the bat flip.
Melbourne Stars are a bit unpredictable like their captain Glenn Maxwell. You never know what you’re going to get. But with a place in the qualifiers on the line, Melbourne Stars will be itching to have a go at Hobart Hurricanes and take the win.
We are backing Melbourne Stars as the winners of this contest.
