Islamabad United beat Multan Sultans by 2 wickets

Will the consistent Multan Sultans be able to go all the way, unlike last two times? Or will United stun them into silence like they did at Rawalpindi a week ago? A riverting final awaits us in Karachi.

  • Mohd. Rizwan and Usman Khan, the dynamic batting duo, with over 750 runs between them, and leg spinner Usama Mir, with 23 scalps from 11 games, will be key for Sultan’s chances.
  • Islamabad United's batting unit rests on the shoulders of three in-form batsmen: Shadab Khan, Agha Salman, and Martin Guptill.
  • In their 15 meetings so far, Multan Sultans have won 8, one more than Islamabad United.

We are backing Multan Sultans to win this match!

Multan Sultans, having made it to final for the fourth team, will be confident ahead of the final. But the recent performances of Islamabad United will create some doubts in their mind.

Riding high on back-to-back knockout wins, Islamabad United are brimming with confidence heading into the final. Imad Wasim has been their hero, starring with both bat and ball. First, he orchestrated a batting collapse against Quetta with crucial wickets in the powerplay. Then, he rescued them from a precarious position in the chase against Peshawar with a crucial fifty alongside Haider Ali.  Another thing Sultans will be mulling over is their failure to defend 228 against United at Rawalpindi.

But Sultans will seek comfort from the fact that they’re the team to beat and the favourites to lift the trophy. If they play to their strengths and carry on like they’ve done in the past few games, they should be able to lift their second title.

Multan Sultans Preview

Mr. Consistent Mohd Rizwan (with 381 runs in 11 matches) and the explosive Usman Khan (373 runs in nearly half as many matches) form the core of Multan Sultans' batting line-up. Captain Rizwan gives Sultans a strong, solid foundation for the incoming batsmen to build on and explode later. Usman Khan, the top order batter, keeps the runs flowing in the middle overs, presenting a lot of headaches to opposition bowlers. He struck two blazing centuries and came close to making it three in a season.

Big-hitter Johnson Charles, replacing Reeza Hendricks, has settled in the squad nicely scoring 106 runs in 3 hits, with a high score of 53. Iftikhar Ahmed has hit himself to form, scoring crucial low order runs in the death overs. On the bowling front, Multan Sultans boast a well-rounded attack with a nice blend of experience and youth. Leggie Usama Mir leads the pack with 23 wickets from 11 games, which includes a 6-wicket haul the best by any bowler in the competition.

Mohd Ali (18 wickets from 11 games) brings raw pace while David Willey (14 wickets from 10 games) demonstrates exceptional swing bowling with the new cherry. Abbas Afridi (13 scalps from 8 games) and Chris Jordan (6 wickets from 5 games) are amongst the wickets too.

Multan Sultans Predicted Playing XI:

Mohammad Rizwan (c & wk), Yasir Khan, Usman Khan, Johnson Charles, Iftikhar Ahmed, Khushdil Shah, Chris Jordan, David Willey, Usama Mir, Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Ali.

Islamabad United Preview

Skipper Shadab Khan leads the charge with a phenomenal 301 runs at a blistering strike rate of 146, providing much-needed middle-order impetus with his aggressive batting style. Alongside him, the dependable Agha Salman has anchored the middle order with his consistent run-scoring, accumulating 300 runs at a healthy strike rate of 142.85. Completing the trio is the experienced Kiwi Martin Guptill, who has put to bed the concerns of replacing an in-form batter like Colin Munro at the top. His two vital contributions in the knockouts have provided a solid foundation for the middle overs.

However, United needs a more consistent performance from their middle and lower order to complement the firepower at the top. Out-of-form opener Alex Hales needs to make a solid contribution upfront and striker Azam Khan should find a way to take the game deep and finish things off if they want to pose a challenge to Multan Sultans.

As far as their bowling goes, Naseem Shah holds the key with his fiery pace, swing and accuracy. The big concern is that the young pacer — with 15 wickets from 10 games—hasn’t had much from the other bowlers. Captain Shadab Khan hasn't been as impactful with the ball (11 wickets from as many games), and Imad Wasim, despite being economical, has failed to provide breakthroughs when needed. The rest of the attack (Faheem Ashraf, Hunain Shah) needs to step up to the plate to put a lid on the opposition scoring runs through the middle overs.

Islamabad United Predicted Playing XI:

Martin Guptill, Alex Hales, Agha Salman, Shadab Khan (c), Azam Khan (wk), Faheem Ashraf, Haider Ali, Imad Wasim, Naseem Shah, Hunain Shah, Obed McCoy.

Weather Conditions

The surface here tends to get a little slower as the match goes on, but both teams have done well so far here scoring enough runs to get into match winning positions. No rain has been predicted for the final and the late start means the weather will be a lot cooler and pleasant for a high-intensity finale.

The National Stadium, Karachi will host the final. Sultans and United have won one game apiece in their two encounters here so far.

Toss: To Bowl

In the 10 matches at Karachi so far, teams chasing have won 6 and lost 4. Given Islamabad United’s excellent chasing record of late, Multan Sultans might look to throw them off a bit by opting to chase if the coin toss goes their way.

Multan Sultans have won just one of their three finals. Ahead of their fourth one, they’ll be a bit wary about coming up against a strong United side that has peaked at the right time, winning four matches on the bounce. However, Sultans have a well-rounded side with the right mix of skill and experience to shine in high pressure situations that a final brings forth.

A solitary run was enough to deny them a trophy last time, but we’re backing Multan Sultans to correct it this time. Sultans to win the final and lift the trophy.

We are backing Multan Sultans to win this match!
