The Netherlands will be taking on Afghanistan in a must-win match at the Ekanna Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. This will be their second match at the venue. In their previous outing here, the Dutch scored 262 runs batting first against Sri Lanka.

It was a great effort considering that the Netherlands were 6 down for 91 runs. The batting has been inconsistent and it will be a major concern for skipper Scott Edwards coming into this game.

Afghanistan on the other hand, have improved their batting performances as they move from strength to strength. After the 149-run loss against NZ, Afghanistan chased down 283 against Pakistan and followed it up with a 7-wicket win over Sri Lanka chasing a target of 242 runs.

As the two teams now meet in a must-win game to stay alive in the race to the semi-finals, the Lucknow pitch offers some exciting news for the bowlers. It will be a close contest between the two teams with Afghanistan starting with a slight edge given their current batting form.

Netherlands Preview

The Netherlands face a tough challenge in Lucknow, the venue where they had suffered a batting collapse against Australia. The opposition has a solid bowling attack and will be confident after back-to-back wins against quality teams.

As such, the top 4 of the Netherlands’ batting lineup need to find their form and deliver some crucial partnerships to set the stage for a big finish. They cannot continue to depend on the lower order to rescue them time and again.

Vikramjit Singh and Max O’Dowd need to play out at least the first powerplay and see the team through to the first 50 runs on the board. Bringing in Wesley Barresi at number 3 in their last game worked out well for the Dutch and all eyes will be on him in this match too.

The middle-order is quite strong with the likes of Colin Ackerman, skipper Scott Edwards, and all-rounder Bas de Leede. Though Edwards scored 68 runs against Bangladesh in their last match, none of the middle-order batters have been consistent.

In their game against Sri Lanka, it was Sybrand Engelbrecht and Logan van Beek who helped the team bounce back with a fifty each at number 7 and 8. This goes to show that there is great potential in this batting lineup.

However, they are currently struggling to find consistency and that will be a major issue going into this match. The bowlers have recently pulled off a big win against Bangladesh and will be key to their victory here in Lucknow.

Paul van Meekeren, Colin Ackerman, and Bas de Leede will be the key bowlers to watch out for.

Afghanistan Preview

Afghanistan are having a great World Cup beating England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, all former Champions. This is the first time they’ve won two consecutive matches in a World Cup.

The best thing about their campaign has been their batting. After their win over England, Afghanistan suffered a huge defeat against New Zealand. They were bowled out for 139 runs while chasing 289.

In the very next game, the openers struck a 130-run partnership while chasing 283 runs against Pakistan. A fifty each from the top 3 batsmen ensured an 8-wicket win for Afghanistan.

In the next match, it was number 3, 4, and 5 who scored a fifty each in leading Afghanistan to a 7-wicket win over Sri Lanka. Rahmat Shah has been in great touch at number 3 with two consecutive fifties.

Azmatullah Omarzai delivered a brilliant knock in the last game giving Afghanistan a great option at number 5. Currently, Afghanistan’s batting looks in great shape.

With Ikram Alikhil injured in the last game, they could bring in Najibullah Zadran as a replacement. Afghanistan should be ready to adapt to the conditions in Lucknow since it won’t be easy to bat here.

The pitch offers ample assistance to bowlers and in recent matches the pacers have been on top of the game. Fazhalhaq Farooqi, Naveen Ul Haq, and Omarzai will be crucial with the ball in addition to the spinners.

Afghanistan Predicted Playing XI:

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi (c), Azmatullah Omarzai, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi

Weather Conditions

It is a balanced pitch that offers help for both batters and bowlers. However, in recent games, the pacers were dominant making batters struggle for runs. India even defended a low score of 229 runs against England on this pitch. The weather will be mostly cloudy with a high of 32 degrees Celsius.

NED vs AFG Pitch Report

Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow will be the venue for this match. It has hosted 4 matches in this World Cup so far and this will be the last. The average 1st innings score here is 229 runs but for a match-winning score, the team batting first should be looking at something over 260-270 runs. Considering the bowling attack of both teams, such a total can be very competitive.

Toss: To Bowl

Teams bowling first have won 9 of the 13 ODIs played at this venue in Lucknow. Afghanistan have successfully chased a target in their last two outings and with a strong bowling attack should be looking to bowl first in this match. Netherlands would not risk batting first given their current form and would rather back their bowlers who look promising after their recent win.

Both teams have great potential and look very promising in every aspect of the game. However, the Netherlands’ inconsistency makes them less reliable over an in-form Afghanistan. Toss can play a crucial role in this game and the team bowling first can start with an advantage. Nevertheless, considering the strengths and weaknesses of both teams, we reckon Afghanistan will have a slight edge in this contest and start as favorites in our match prediction.
