Sri Lanka are yet to open their in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. They have lost each of the three games they have played so far and are languishing at the bottom of the table with zero points and a net run rate of -1.532. The Lankan Lions desperately need a turnaround, or this World Cup will slip away quickly from their grasp.
Sri Lanka have a relatively easy assignment coming up – against Netherlands at Lucknow on October 21. However, Netherlands have just caused the mother of all upsets by defeating South Africa in their previous game and thus can’t be taken lightly.

Nobody really expected Netherlands to go far in this World Cup. However, they have come through to the tournament after a brilliant show in the qualifiers. These men can’t be taken lightly, and they showed exactly why the other day against South Africa. They didn’t just secure a win over the Proteas; they outplayed them comprehensively and, in the process, ed their first ODI win against a Test-playing nation.
In the previous game, it was skipper Scott Edwards who led the way with an outstanding unbeaten knock of 78 from 69 balls, when the team was reeling at 112-6 at one point. Edwards has been in fine form of late, having scored 339 runs in the last 10 matches at an average of 56.5 and a strike rate of 110.
The team will also be expecting a lot from Bas de Leede. The all-rounder has been the backbone of this Netherlands side for a while now. He has scored 368 runs and taken 21 wickets in his last 9 matches. He is also the leading wicket-taker of the team in the World Cup.
Logan van Beek and Roelof van der Merwe, who have both grabbed 4 wickets apiece in this tournament, are the other two bowlers to watch out for. Van der Merwe looks to have found his rhythm and was excellent in the match against South Africa. Although Sri Lanka’s batters are much better against spin, he should be able to trouble them on this surface.

Sri Lanka are having a horror time in this ODI World Cup. They are yet to win a game and need to find answers to their woes very quickly. One of the things that Sri Lanka needs to address first is their dramatic batting collapses. In their previous match against Australia at Lucknow, they were cruising at 157-1 at one stage but went on to be bowled out for 209. Before that, against Pakistan, they were 218-2 in the 29th over and eventually managed 126-7 from the next 21 overs.
Sri Lanka would be looking at Kusal Mendis to lead the batting unit. He is among the top scorers of the tournament current with 207 runs in 3 matches at an average of 69, and a strike rate of 157. Mendis has already hit a hundred and would love to add another here.
Also watch out for Sadeera Samarawickrama (139 runs from 3 matches in this tournament). He has been in good flow, and another big one from him is around the corner.
Openers Pathum Nissanka (61 off 67 balls) and Kusal Perera (78 off 82 balls) had a good outing here at Lucknow the last time they played here in the match versus Australia. That confidence might help them get some more runs here.
Sri Lanka’s bowling has been less than ordinary in the tournament. They have regularly leaked runs and have failed to maintain any pressure. Left-arm fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka has been their standout performer, taking 7 wickets so far from 3 matches at an average of 26.28.
Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage haven’t looked their best so far, but this match should allow them to get back into some rhythm. The Netherlands batters aren’t the best players of spin, and these two will surely ask them plenty of questions for which they might not have many answers.

The Ekana Cricket Stadium offers a typical Indian surface. It’s great to bat on during the first half of the innings. However, as the match progresses, the pitch becomes slower, and the ball tends to grip the surface. Batting becomes tougher in the second half, and if the chasing side has a target of around 270-odd to get, they might struggle.
The weather in Lucknow will be hazy and warm.
The average first inning score at the Ekana Cricket Stadium after six ODIs is 208. South Africa’s 311-7 against Australia last week is the highest team total posted here. The team batting first should look to preserve wickets and keep building partnerships because this isn’t a typical high-scoring venue and teams tend to lose wickets at regular intervals during the middle overs. The team batting first would look to set a target of around 270-280 runs.
The pitch at the Ekana Cricket Stadium tends to slow down a bit as the game goes on. So, it makes better sense to bat first and try to put on a huge total. This is exactly what happened in the game between South Africa and Australia at this venue last week. South Africa posted 311-7 after batting first and went on to win the match by 134 runs.
Netherlands will be soaring after that emphatic victory over South Africa and will now be eyeing Sri Lanka as their next target. However, they have yet to beat the Lankan Lions in 50-over cricket in five attempts. Most recently, the two teams clashed twice in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe, including the finals, and Sri Lanka emerged victorious on both occasions.
Yes, the Lankan Lions haven’t been at their best ever since the drubbing they received from India in the Asia Cup final. However, they are still a pretty good side, and we don’t think Netherlands would be able to get past them. The men in orange will put up a spirited fight, but Sri Lanka have played them recently and know their strengths and weaknesses well. Their top order and their spinners should help them sail through.
