New Zealand are all set to host the Aussies for a 3-match T20I series followed by 2 Test matches. The hosts are coming in strong with a 4-1 series win over Pakistan back in January this year.

Australia have also been exceptional in T20Is with a 2-1 series win over West Indies recently. With all of their best T20 players featuring in both squads, the opening match at Sky Stadium promises to be an exciting contest.

A drop-in pitch is used at this venue and as a result, we can expect it to favor the batsmen. However, the highest score chased here in T20Is is 163 runs by New Zealand against the Windies.

We expect even bigger totals to be chased in this outing given the squad strengths of both teams. Australia’s got Glenn Maxwell in the middle-order followed by the likes of Tim David and Matthew Wade as finishers.

Whereas, the hosts will be backing Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips to lead them to a big total. Aussies look a lot stronger on paper given the T20 experience their players bring to the table.

New Zealand Preview

The Blackcaps will be taking on the Aussies in the T20Is without Kane Williamson. In the 1st match, there will be no Trent Boult either who will the squad from the 2nd game onward.

Tim Southee and Matt Henry will be the key bowlers for the opening T20I of the series. The two were quite successful in the last home series against Pakistan and were well ed by Lockie Ferguson who bowled at an impressive economy and was consistent with wickets.

In their last T20I match, the 5th of the series against Pakistan, New Zealand were bowled out for 92 runs while chasing a small target of 135 runs.

Australia have called back all of their star bowlers for this series and will pose quite a tough challenge to the hosts. It will be up to Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra to see the pacers in the powerplay while maintaining a healthy run rate at the same time.

New Zealand also have the option of bringing in Finn Allen instead of Ravindra to open alongside Conway. Allen had scored a big hundred against Pakistan recently.

In the middle-order, there is no doubt, that most of the responsibility lies on Daryl Mitchell. He is the key player expected to be the anchor of this batting lineup.

The key to success will be the contributions from the top 3. While Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips can build partnerships and lead the team to a big total, they can’t be expected to pull off such feats on their own every single time.

New Zealand Predicted Playing XI:

Finn Allen, Tim Seifert (wk), Will Young, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner (c), Adam Milne, Matt Henry, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson

New Zealand Actual Playing XI:

Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, Josh Clarkson, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee

Australia Preview

Pat Cummins is back in T20Is though Mitchell Marsh will be the captain of the side in this series. Along with Cummins, Australia have also brought in Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.

A full-strength bowling attack along with an in-form batting lineup that features David Warner at the top adds a lot of strength to this Australian setup. David Warner and Glenn Maxwell have both made big contributions at their respective batting positions in the recent T20 series.

Tim David who wasn’t striking well lately and not delivering the big finishes expected of him has finally found his form. He looked in great touch against the West Indies.

And though Marcus Stoinis wasn’t scoring much in the middle-order, he surely delivered with the ball. He was consistently picking up wickets and will be a key all-rounder for Australia in this match.

Adam Zampa will be the key wicket-taker for Australia. Maxwell is another all-rounder who can make a difference with the ball.

And while both Travis Head and Matthew Wade are big hitters of the white-ball, we reckon only one of them will get a place in the XI. And considering the recent T20I series, we think Wade is the more likely candidate.

Skipper Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis can be expected to come in at 3 and 4 respectively. It is a deep batting lineup with a star player at every position.

Australia tick all the boxes in both batting and bowling departments. They will have an edge going into this match despite the Blackcaps having the home advantage.

Australia Predicted Playing XI:

David Warner, Josh Inglis, Mitchell Marsh (c), Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Matthew Wade (wk), Adam Zampa, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood

Australia Actual Playing XI:

Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Short, David Warner, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Timothy David, Adam Zampa

Weather Conditions

It is a drop-in pitch here at the Sky Stadium in Wellington. Drop-in pitches tend to favor the batters. There is something for the bowlers as well and we expect an even contest between the bat and the ball.

NZ vs AUS Pitch Report

Sky Stadium in Wellington will be the venue for the 1st T20I of this series. The average 1st innings score here is 150 runs. However, for a match-winning score, the team batting first should aim at 185+ runs. Both teams have a deep batting lineup with some in-form and promising T20 players. Anything below 180 will be quite tough to defend here.

Toss: To Bat

There hasn’t been any particular advantage to either batting first or second on this ground. Teams batting second have won 11 of the 21 T20Is played here. However, a big total on the board will allow the team to put the opposition under pressure with early wickets. There haven’t been any big successful run chase here and we reckon batting first and having runs on the board will be a sound strategy in this match.

The two teams are equally matched as far as their current form is concerned. However, we think Australia have a stronger squad with more experienced T20 specialists that offer depth in the batting and variety in the bowling attack. Australia will start as favorites in our match prediction.
