After a nail-biting finish to the first T20I at Sky Stadium, the T20I series between New Zealand and Australia is nicely poised for an exciting close.
The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first, and they backed up the decision by posting a formidable total on board- 215 for 3 in 20 overs. Chasing 216 against the versatile Kiwi attack in New Zealand is an uphill task, but the Australians stayed in the hunt throughout their chase and took the game deep to steal a last ball win.
Yes, the visitors did manage to clinch the first T20I, but the series is far from over.
With a couple more matches to go, New Zealand can still go two in two to stage a comeback series victory. Or Australia can win the next one and take an unassailable 2-0 lead over the hosts.
Will the hosts bounce back? Or will the visitors thwart the hosts from counterattacking?
New Zealand put up a superb performance with the bat, scoring 215 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Finn Allen got them off to a flier, hitting two boundaries and three maximums in the 17 balls he faced. With the right-handed opener departing, Rachin Ravindra took the attack to the opposition scoring a blazing 68 runs off 35 balls to put New Zealand on track to reaching a formidable total. He got a nice hand from opener Devon Conway who helped himself to some form after a string of poor scores in the recent test series.
Both batters returned to the pavilion when there was nearly full four overs to play, leaving the finishing job to incoming middle order hitters Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman. And they didn’t disappoint. They got the hosts over 200 and belted a few boundaries towards the back end to finish with 215/3 in 20 overs. Defending 216, the hosts never looked comfortable.
New ball pair Tim Southee and Adam Milne were taken to the cleaners, with the 8 overs between them costing 105 runs; however, we need to see whether Trent Boult can slot straight in to the XI on his return to the Kiwi side in the shortest format and what sort of impact he can create with the ball early on. The Aussie batters attacked the spinners targeting the short boundaries, and both Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi found it extremely hard to contain their onslaught.
Lockie Ferguson was the pick of the bowlers and bowled a tidy spell, giving away 23 runs in 4 overs.

Chasing down any target over 200 in an away venue is no mean feat, but the visitors have done it twice in three months. Mad Max was the hero for the Aussies in Guwahati in November 2023, and late-order hitter Tim David and Mitchell Marsh combined to clinch a thriller in Wellington two days ago. They got over the line off the last ball in both the matches.
Tim David, who finished with 31 off 10, smashed a boundary in the last ball to seal the win, after taking 16 runs off the last 3 balls in the penultimate over from Adam Milne. Mitchell Marsh, anchored the innings with a brilliant 72, scoring crucial boundaries throughout the innings to keep the scoreboard nicely ticking along.
It is brilliant to watch the powerful strokeplay of arguably one of the most intimidating batting units going around that bats deep, but their bowlers haven’t been good at all. Having conceded over 200 runs in an innings 7 times in the last nine matches, the Australian bowlers definitely need to get their act together. They often leave it to the batsmen to bail the team out of trouble, after allowing the opposition to get up to a formidable total.

The deck here at the Eden Park favours batsmen completely. Bowlers tend to travel a lot here so we expect another juicy deck where both teams can manage scores above 200 if they bat to potential. The forecast puts the chances of rain at 44% which drops down to 12% in the evening. But there will be some cloud cover throughout the match.
The second T20I of this series will be played at Eden Park, Auckland. The visitors will have happy memories of this ground, having chased down a daunting 245 target set by the hosts six years ago. It’s worth noting that the first ever T20 international was played between these two teams at this venue.
Win toss, bat first and score a boatload of runs- that’s the mantra to put yourself in a winning position in grounds like Eden Park. It’s not a challenging ground to chase down scores either, considering the highest total at this venue was scored by a chasing team.
There are still a few kinks for Australia to iron out in their bowling department, but the bowlers have the batting unit to thank for. Their deep batting unit has managed to get them out of trouble— more often than not. And there's no reason why they can't again. New Zealand are still a strong force at home in the T20I formats, but it looks like Australia have the momentum going into this fixture.
