South African cricket summer begins with three T20 international matches against India, who’re coming off a 4-1 series win against a second-string Australian side.
With several key players missing after a demanding world cup campaign, Team India still has plenty of players in good form, good enough to challenge the Proteas in their home conditions. A fair bit of T20Is are left to be played before the world cup kicks off in June next year, and both the teams will come into the series trying to identify the best pool of players that they should take to the marquee event.
For India, several players in their second-string line-up stepped up and knocked out Australia convincingly, giving selectors and team management a problem-of-plenty. South Africa, on the other hand, tried the same approach before the ODI world cup in their T20 series against Australia and went down 0-3. They’ll be looking to make amends and help new players find their slots and play with confidence.
Plenty of new faces in the SA squad for this tournament with QDK(rested), Kagiso Rabada(rested), Anrich Nortje (injury), and Lungi Ngidi (injury) not featuring, SA management have decided to take a chance with players with huge potential namely Matthew Breetzke, Donovan Ferreira, Ottniel Baartman and left arm pacer Nandre Burger. All the young guns picked in the SA T20 squad for this tournament will want to be more than just placeholders.
Now that they’ve got a foot in the door, they’ll be wanting to play to their potential and make a strong case for future selections. Only six matches to go before the T20 WC in June means these players don’t have much time to ease their way into the squad, and they’ll have to hit the ground running if they want to grab the chances with both hands and make the final 15 member squad for the world cup.
Reeza Hendricks may open the batting with Matthew Breetzke who hasn’t quite set the stage on fire yet but has plenty of potential though, and Markram is likely to bat at three. Klaasen, Miller, Donovan Ferrira and Phehlukwayo add solidity and explosiveness to the middle order, while Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee and Lizaad Williams are the pace bowling options and Keshav Maharaj the lone spinner.

An opportunity to settle score for a dismal show the last time they were here is waiting for new-look team India side. Some players have returned to the fray after a short break and may walk straight into the team with players who featured in the Australian series making way. Ravindra Jadeja could replace Axar Patel (not selected), Kuldeep Yadav could start ahead of Ravi Bishnoi who was just crowned the number 1 bowler in this format), and Mohammed Siraj may step in for Avesh Khan (not selected). Overall, this T20 side has clearly gotten stronger with much more experienced players coming back and trying to make their places their own before the T20 world cup.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad could open the attack with Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav batting at #3 and $4 respectively. Team India clearly don’t bat as deep as their South African counterparts with Rinku Singh set to come in at #5, and Jitesh Sharma edging out Ishan Kishan at #6 for the Wicket Keeper spot and bowling all-rounder Jadeja at #7. And with only bowlers to follow, India don’t have a long tail though and that might prove to be a bit of a problem especially if SA pacers manage to pick up some early wickets.

The pitch is quite conducive to both pace and spin bowling, with pacers and spinners enjoying equal success. Local conditions does resemble Indian wickets a touch so playing here might not be completely foreign for Team India.

Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium is going to host this contest between the two teams. Square boundaries are not too big and the outfield is pretty fast here, so twos and threes might be a little hard to come by in the middle overs, and teams can go looking for the maximums to keep scoreboard ticking over and lose wickets in the process.
The results of the last 15 games here suggest toss does tend to play a big role. Teams winning the toss chose to bat 11 out of 15 times, which is a clear indication that teams find chasing a bit of a challenge here. Anything above 185 should be above par for the team batting first.
Team India had a successful campaign against Australia at home, but adjusting to South African conditions might not be easy for the visitors. With several players coming in after a short break, they can take time to shake off their rustiness and get in the groove. Team SA may have a few new faces in their lineup, but they’ll be menacing to face in their home conditions.
