The Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2023 has just begun, and Pakistan have ed a thumping win over Bangladesh in the first match to take the top spot. Bangladesh looked all at sea against a dangerous Pakistani side and will now have to quickly get things in order. Their next match is against Sri Lanka, a team against whom they have enjoyed a fierce rivalry of late. However, Sri Lanka have a great record against the Tigers in ODI cricket and have beaten them in this Asia Cup itself. The home conditions will give them a further edge.

Sri Lanka were given a proper scare by Afghanistan in their last game and almost missed out on a spot on the Super Four stage. Fortunately, they held their nerves to win by three runs. Sri Lanka are thus the only team in this Asia Cup to enter the Super Fours with two consecutive wins, including one against Bangladesh.
Opener Pathum Nissanka has been their most consistent batter in recent times. He has scored 472 runs in his last 10 matches at an average of 59 and a strike rate of almost 90.
His opener partner Dimuth Karunaratne has also been among the runs, scoring 402 from his last 9 matches at an average of 50.25 and a strike rate of 88.54.
Kusal Mendis, fresh from a brilliant knock of 92 off 84 balls against Afghanistan, is another one worth backing. The wicket-keeper batter has collected 388 runs in 13 ODIs this year at an average of 43.11.
Charith Asalanka has had scores of 63* and 36 in the two matches of this series. Another useful cameo from him down the order is expected.
Matheesha Pathirana has been the standout bowler for Sri Lanka in this Asia Cup. The young fast bowler has impressed one and all with his ability to bowl consistent yorkers and fox batsmen with his pace changes. Pathirana has taken 8 wickets from his last 5 matches at an economy of 5.64.
In the absence of Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana has done a commendable job. In the previous game against Bangladesh, the off-spinner gave away just 19 runs from his 8 overs while picking up two wickets. He also bowls in the powerplay overs and keeps things tight.

In Bangladesh’s previous game against Sri Lanka in this Asia Cup, Najmul Hossain Shanto top-scored with a gritty knock of 89 off 122 deliveries. Shanto has been the team’s most successful batter in recent months, but, unfortunately, he will take no further part in the tournament due to an injury.
In his absence, the likes of Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim will have to take on extra responsibilities. Both are the most experienced batters in the side and are well used to playing in these conditions. Mushfiqur’s 64 off 87 balls against Pakistan was the team’s highest score in a total of 193 all out. Shakib, meanwhile, also scored a useful 53 off 57 balls.
Another batter the Tigers can depend on is Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The spin bowling all-rounder has been a revelation with the bat in recent months. Bangladesh used him as an opener in the match against Afghanistan, and the talented youngster delivered by blasting an amazing 112* from 119 balls. His performance can be detrimental to Bangladesh’s fortunes.
Bangladesh’s bowlers have been doing a fine job, particularly their pacers. Taskin Ahmed (12 wickets in his last 6 matches at an economy of 3.89) has been one of the most improved fast bowlers in recent years. His pace and ability to extract bounce and movement off the pitch will trouble Sri Lanka’s batters.
Hasan Mahmud (13 wickets in his last 8 matches at 5.58) is another seamer who can make a difference on this pitch.
Bangladesh’s spinners haven’t looked too effective in this series, and that’s something that might hurt them in this match. That said, we do expect the wily Shakib to produce an impressive spell.

R. Premadasa's pitch typically favors batters, especially in the early innings. It offers good pace and bounce, which enables stroke play and entertaining bat-and-ball battles. However, as the game progresses, the pitch can slow down and become more spin-friendly, making it difficult for batters to score freely. Spinners will definitely play a part in the game during the middle overs.
The weather in Colombo is expected to be cloudy with a couple of thunderstorms, especially early in the day.
Historically, scores of 250-300 are common at the R.Premadasa Stadium, making it relatively high-scoring. The average score batting first at the venue is 225. The highest total posted here is 375-5 by India against Sri Lanka in 2017 after batting first. The average runs per over on this ground is 4.87. The team batting first should look to set a target of around 270-280 runs.
76 out of the 151 ODIs played at the R.Premadasa Stadium have been won by the team batting first. Thus, it’s likely that the toss-winning team will look to bat first in this game.
Sri Lanka hold a 41-9 head-to-head record against Bangladesh in ODIs. Playing in home conditions will certainly give them an edge. Furthermore, despite missing a few important players, they appear to have a well-rounded team. On this pitch, their spinners will trouble the opposition batters consistently. The Tigers will be counting on their experienced stars, along with Mehidy Hasan Miraz, to come up with the goods. Otherwise, they might struggle here. We do, however, expect their bowlers to do a good job on this pitch.
We are backing Sri Lanka as the winners of this match.
