The all-round effort by the hosts Sri Lanka started the ODI series with a thrilling tie at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. In a nail-biting climax, Leading Sri Lanka in ODI cricket for the first time, Charith Asalanka delivered a dramatic finish by taking down Shivam Dube and No. 11 Arshdeep Singh with successive balls. With the series poised as 0-0, the second ODI of the three-match series will be played at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on 4th August from 2:30 pm.
Batting first in the series starter, Sri Lanka were 101 for 5 at one point. But then all-rounder Dunith Welalage took matters into his hands to score 67 runs off 65 balls to take Sri Lanka to 230 runs for losing 8 wickets. Besides Welalage, opener Pathum Nissanka scored a well-deserving half-century. Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel took two wickets each for India.
Returning from a short break, the T20I World Cup-winning captain Rohit Sharma hit 7 fours and three sixes to score a half-century at the start. Welalage then sent him and Shubhman Gill back to the pavilion to push India on the back foot. Sri Lankan spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Asalanka took three wickets each to tie the game in the 48th over.
This was a back-to-back tied game between both. But it felt like a victory for Sri Lanka. Their last win against India was back in 2021.
After a successful take on Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Zimbabwe this year, Sri Lanka must be high on confidence with the efforts from both batting and bowling unit. Pathum Nissanka will open the innings with Avishka Fernando. No other batter in the ODIs has had more runs than Pathum Nissanka since the start of 2023. He has scored 1704 runs with 5 centuries and 10 half-centuries since then. He has 553 ODI runs this year - the highest by any batter, that too with a strike rate of over 120. He will be the batter to watch out for. But Fernando is struggling at the top with just 252 runs in 19 innings.
Kusal Mendis will come at number three. He has 1257 runs since 2023 with nine half-centuries. Samarwickrama and Asalanka will come in the middle with Janith Liyanage. Both Samarwickrama and Asalanka have more than 1000 runs since last year with two centuries and 12 half-centuries shared between them. The major issue with the middle order is that the trio averages less than 15 against India.
Dunith Welalage will lead the bowling unit with Wanindu Hasaranga and Akila Dananjaya. Welalage was the man of the match in the first ODI for his 67 runs with the bat and 2 wickets with the ball. He has 7 wickets in the last 5 innings against India. Hasaranga finally took three wickets after going wicketless in the last three games against India, which is their leading wicket-taker since 2023. The leg-spinner has 48 wickets in the last 21 matches at an economy of 5.19. He will be the bowler to watch out for. With the spin-friendly track, Maheesh Theeksana might come in for Mohamed Shiraz.

Skipper Rohit Sharma is still in the mood of T20s. He smashed the Sri Lankan bowling attack all over the park scoring 58 runs in 47 deliveries. He will open with Shubhman Gill. Gill averages over 60 against Sri Lanka with 361 runs in 7 innings. Virat Kohli played a slow innings in the first game. But his history with Sri Lanka is quite powerful. In 52 innings, Kohli has 2618 runs against the hosts with 10 centuries and 12 half-centuries. He will be the batter to watch out for.
Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Washington Sunder will come in the middle. Rahul has 1091 runs at an average of 64.17 since the start of the last year. On the other hand, Iyer has scored 869 runs in 20 innings at an average of 51.11 during the same period. India will be playing two more all-rounders along with Sundar. Though the trio has taken just 13 wickets since 2023, looking at the spin-friendly track, Sundar and Patel will be a threat to the Sri Lankan batting unit.
Mohammed Siraj will lead the pace attack with Arshdeep Singh. Siraj is the second leading wicket-taker for India since 2023 with 45 wickets in 25 innings at an economy of 5.25. He has 20 wickets at an average of 9.66 in the last 7 ODIs against Sri Lanka. Kuldeep Yadav will be the bowler to watch out for. He leads the bowling stats for India with 50 wickets at an economy of 4.55 since the last year.

The rain has been predicted for the next three days at Colombo. The weather will be cloudy and humid. The temperatures will be between 26°C and 29°C.
R. Premadasa Stadium is known for its traditionally bowling-friendly pitch, which can provide an assist to spinners as the game progresses. The pitch often favors batsmen, especially during the first innings, while spinners may find some later in the game. It also has a history of good conditions for fast bowlers due to its grass cover.

The second ODI of the three-match series will be played at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on 4th August from 2:30 pm. The venue has hosted 8 Tests, 165 ODIs & 58 T20Is.
In 165 ODIs the team defending the target has won 88 times. But four out of the last six games have been successfully chased here. With spin getting heavy as the innings proceed the team winning the toss should bowl first here.
Though Sri Lanka made a comeback in the first ODI to force a tie, India has an outstanding record against them. They have won 6 out of the last seven ODIs against Sri Lanka. Including two 300+ run-margin wins. India has recorded the highest total of 375 on the same venue in which both Sharma and Kohli had scored a century each.
But the match might get washed out seeing the rain is certain.
We predict that India will defeat Sri Lanka.
