After the fiasco in India that resulted in the abandonment of the Test between New Zealand and Afghanistan, New Zealand are in Sri Lanka now to play two Tests, which are part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle. Hosts Sri Lanka will take on New Zealand in the first Test at Galle on 18th September 2024 at 10am. The second Test of the series will be also be played at the same venue.
This is an important series for Sri Lanka and New Zealand, especially New Zealand, which still has a good chance of making it to the finals for this WTC cycle. A couple of wins here would go a long way toward cementing a place in the finals. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are known to be a tough team to beat in home conditions. The spin, on both sides, is expected to play a huge part in the game. The game will have a rest day on the 21st of September due to the presidential elections. An exciting game of cricket is coming up at Galle. The rain is likely, but hopefully, it will allow us to have a result in this Test match.
Pathum Nissanka - we won’t be forgetting that name anytime soon. He was the hero of Sri Lanka’s first Test victory in over a decade against England away from home. A win like that has the ability to lift the side’s confidence multi-fold. Sri Lanka would now like to utilise it against New Zealand in home conditions.
Nissanka's innings of 127 off 124 balls were so easy and brutal that one could say he baz-balled England at their home to help lead Sri Lanka to a memorable victory. Let’s not forget the important hand the pacers played in that game. Lahiru Kumara, Asitha and Vishwa Fernando were phenomenal in keeping the 4th innings target to a minimum.
The good news for Sri Lanka is that Oshada Fernando is back in the squad after impressive performances for the A team. Nishan Madushka has been left out, along with fast-bowling all-rounder Nisala Tharaka and seamer Kasun Rajitha. Odisha might not find a place in the playing eleven, given that Karunaratne, Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Chandimal, Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Kamindu Mendis are all likely to feature in the XI.
Sri Lanka have won 66% of the matches at this venue in the last 10 years. The win percentage is on the decline, but Sri Lanka are likely to have the upper hand in this game in home conditions, especially in the presence of spinner Prabath Jayasuriya who has taken 46 wickets in the last 9 Tests. Unless New Zealand find a way to tackle spin, the game looks like Sri Lanka’s to lose.
Key players: Prabath Jayasuriya, Prathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Dhananjaya de Silva

New Zealand would be ruing the missed opportunity to play Afghanistan in India as a preparation for an important Test series against Sri Lanka. Thankfully, it did not cost them any WTC points, as Afghanistan are not part of the current WTC cycle, but it surely robbed them of some essential practice against Afghanistan spinners before the trial by spin in Sri Lanka.
New Zealand have a pretty good record against Sri Lanka in the last few years. They have won 4 of the last 5 tests played against the Lankans. In their last tour here in Sri Lanka, the Kiwis managed to win one Test, that too, by an innings and 65 runs. Tom Latham and BJ Watling scored centuries in that game. While Latham is in the current squad, Watling won’t be playing this series.
New Zealand are coming into this series with 2-0 loss at home against Australia. They were expected to win at least one of those two Tests. And this is precisely why they needed that solitary Test against Afghanistan to prepare for this series.
Captain Tim Southee is going to have to find ways to win on a spin-friendly surface to stay afloat in the WTC cycle. Kane Williamson, averaging about 65 in the last 10 games (1098 Runs) and Daryll Mitchell - 616 Runs in the last 9 games - will be the backbone of batting for this team. Matt Henry with 40 wickets in the last 10 games will lead the bowling along with Southee and Santner.
Key players: Tim Southee, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner, Kane Williamson

The weather on the match day at Galle Cricket Stadium is not good news. It is expected to experience scattered rain showers throughout the day with periods of moderate to heavy rainfall. It’s a tough call for the captain winning the toss, given the conditions. Temperatures will likely range between 26°C and 29°C with high humidity levels. Be prepared for delays and interruptions in the match.
The venue of the match is Galle International Stadium. It is one of the most iconic and picturesque stadiums in Sri Lanka. Formerly a racecourse, it was converted to a cricket stadium almost 100 years ago in 1927. Incidentally, the first Test match played here was between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in 1998. The stadium has a seating capacity of 35,000 spectators.
The pitch at Galle is known to assist spinners in the later stages of the game. The first and second innings of a Test match are the best times to score runs here. Overall, 38 Tests have ended with an outright result at this venue - 25 (66%) have been won by the team batting first, while 13 (34%) have been won by the team batting second. It’s no secret that the teams want to bat first here after winning the toss.
Sri Lanka are high in confidence after the historic victory in England. They are back in their den now and ready to dismantle the opposition with their spin attack. New Zealand are coming here after a home series loss and an abandoned Test. Sri Lanka have traditionally done well at Galle. They would fancy a win here at home under suitable conditions.
