The final league games of the first T20 spring challenge are here, with the action moving to Cricket Central, Sydney. Many teams are going to be featuring on the penultimate day of the group stages but our focus shifts to this fixture between Sydney Thunder women and Perth Scorchers women.
The hosts Thunder, bringing up the rear on the points table, are yet to get off the mark with two losses in two matches, and are the only winless team in the tournament so far.
The visitors from Perth are not far away from the bottom, having managed just the one win from three matches. So many teams stranded on two points still have a couple of more matches in hand, and they’ve better odds of qualifying for the playoffs than the women in Orange.
With both teams struggling to make an impact so far, they’ll be hoping to finish the tournament on a high and carry that momentum into the WBBL which gets underway in a couple of weeks’ time following the World Cup in the UAE.

Sydney Thunder were blown away by Brisbane Heat in their first match of this tournament.
The margin of defeat was so huge that they found it hard to recover in time to compete well with ACT women. They lost their second encounter, too. A 13-run defeat didn’t help their battered NRR one bit, and now they’re in a bit of a bind looking for two massive victories in the rest of the matches with the hopes of staying alive in the competition.
Anika Learoyd and Georgia Voll are leading run scorers for the Thunder crew with 55 runs and 42 runs respectively. Nothing earth-shattering but they’ve beem the go-to batters for the team from Sydney, in the absence of their regulars who’re away representing Australia in the World Cup.
Tahlia Wilson, the captain and the wicketkeeper, hasn’t found her feet yet and is due for a big innings at the top of the order.
On the bowling front, Samantha Bates made her mark with a fine display of spin bowling early on in the innings to push the Melbourne stars slightly on the back foot. Jade Allen and Georgia Voll rolled their arm over and found the odd breakthrough on a helpful surface in Sydney, but as a bowling Sydney Thunder have been largely underwhelming.

The Scorchers women got off to a losing start, going down to Strikers at the Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide. Chasing 151 for a win, they lost their way after Maddy Darke and Ines McKeon from the top order providing them a good base to finish off the chase, falling short by 15 runs in the end.
They were not penetrative with the ball either, with only Bhavi Devchand amongst the wickets with a 3-fer. Their bowlers couldn’t put in an improved performance in the second fixture against the Renegades. Except Charis Bekker who orchestrated three dismissals- two with the ball in hand and one with a brilliant piece of fielding - the rest of the bowlers combined couldn’t get even a single wicket.
And to make things worse their batters got off to a poor start. Chloe Piparo came along and took charge, compiling 82 runs off 47 balls and stitching partnerships with the lower order particularly with Charlie Bekker and Shay Manolini for the 9th and 10th wicket respectively to see off the chase under tense circumstances in the last over.
The inspirational effort did little to help them overcome the Hurricanes in their next encounter. Batting first, they finished with a below par score. And their bowlers, again, had a torrid time restricting the Hurricanes openers who blitzed their way to a flying start and wiped out almost half the target in the powerplay.
Maddy Darke(w), Bhavi M Devchand, Ines McKeon, Mikayla Hinkley, Chloe Piparo(c), Rebecca McGrath, Lilly Mills, Stella Campbell, Zoe Britcliffe, Charis Bekker, Shay Manolini, Chloe Bartholomew.

With the venue being new, there’s barely any statistics on how this surface is likely to behave.
Will it take spin? Will the pacers enjoy the extra pace on the deck? We don't know. We can’t put our finger on whether it’ll suit the batters more than bowlers. Or whether the bowlers will have headaches containing batters.
But with both teams struggling to pick wickets and the batters unable to score runs freely, a middling total or a less than par total seems realistic.
Conditions are expected to be partly cloudy especially in the a.m. but we’re hoping the clouds will clear just in time for the match to begin.
Cricket Central, Sydney is where this fixture is all set to take place. This is the first time this venue is hosting matches at this level.
Teams have preferred to chase in the tournament, and for good reason. 8 of the 13 matches completed so far have been won by the team chasing. It’ll not be surprising to see the captain winning the toss in tomorrow fixture putting the opposition in to have a bat first.
Perth Scorchers are not at their best, but their opponents Sydney Thunder are not any better. We reckon Scorchers batters will come to the party and take advantage of Thunder’s weak bowling attack. Scorchers to win.
We are backing Perth Scorchers as winners of this contest.
