India Preview

India come into this series on the back of an impressive and dominating 2-0 Test series win against Bangladesh. Almost every player from that squad has been retained, meaning the home side will have a balanced and strong attack ready to take on the opposition.

Yashasvi Jaiswal will open with captain Rohit Sharma, and the duo will once again look to provide the team with a rollicking start. Jaiswal, in particular, has been phenomenal in the format ever since his debut. In 2024, the left-hand opener has a whopping 929 runs in just 15 innings at an average of 66.35. He has smashed 2 hundreds and 6 half centuries in this period.

Apart from him, Shubman Gil, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul are expected to continue their superb form and provide stability to the middle-order. If the middle-order fails, India also has the cushion of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin to make some crucial runs down the order.

These two spin-bowling all-rounders will also be the bowling mainstays for India throughout the series. Ashwin and Jadeja took 11 and 9 wickets, respectively, in the two Tests against Bangladesh, and will fancy themselves against New Zealand’s batters, who recently struggled against Sri Lanka.

Then, of course, there is Jasprit Bumrah, arguably the best fast bowler in the world right now. Bumrah has been lethal throughout this year and will challenge the opposition with the old ball.

Key Players: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah

India Predicted Playing XI:

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

India Actual Playing XI:

Rohit Sharma, Sarfaraz Khan, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Lokesh Rahul, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Yashasvi Jaiswal

New Zealand Preview

New Zealand haven’t had the best of times in Tests this year and are coming into this series after being whitewashed 0-2 by Sri Lanka. To make matters worse, the Black Caps will be without the services of their premier batsman, Kane Williamson for the first Test owing to an injury.

The onus will now be on new captain Tom Latham to lead from the front. That won’t be easy against India’s formidable bowling attack.

In the series against Sri Lanka, Rachin Ravindra was the team’s top run-getter with 153 runs in 4 innings at an average of 38.25. Rachin played exceptionally well in India in last year’s World Cup and we expect a strong series for him here.

You can also back Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, and Tom Blundell to get some runs, as they have the experience of doing well in these conditions.

The bowling looks a little thin. Ajaz Patel did well the last time he toured India, taking 17 wickets in 2 Tests. In the series against Sri Lanka recently, the left-arm spinner was the team’s t-highest wicket-taker with 8 scalps at 35.62.

Fast bowler William O’Rourke was excellent in the Sri Lanka Test series, so the management might prefer him over Matt Henry.

Key Players: Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Ajaz Patel

New Zealand Predicted Playing XI:

Tom Latham (c), Devon Conway, Mark Chapman/ Michael Bracewell, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ajaz Patel, Matt Henry/William O’Rourke

New Zealand Actual Playing XI:

Tom Latham, Tom Blundell, Devon Conway, Will Young, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Matt Henry, William O'Rourke, Ajaz Patel, Tim Southee

Weather Conditions

The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru is renowned for its consistent bounce and brisk pace, typically offering a balanced battle between batsmen and bowlers. Leading up to the first Test, there's been a good amount of rain in the city, and the forecast suggests persistent cloud cover throughout the Test. This means fast bowlers should get decent movement off the air. Despite this, the pitch will still offer some turn for the spin bowlers.

Expect cloudy skies with occasional thunderstorms throughout the Test. The weather will be pleasant, with moderate winds blowing from the southwest.

The average first innings score at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru is 358. The highest team total posted at the venue is India’s 626 versus Pakistan back in 2007. The team batting first in this Test will be looking to get to a score of around 350 runs.

Toss: To Bowl

The team batting first has won 10 of the 24 Tests played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium; 5 have been won by the team batting second, and 9 have been drawn. With cloudy skies expected on the first couple of days of the Test, the captain winning the toss might be tempted to bowl first.

New Zealand's track record in India is poor, with just two wins from 36 Tests. Their current form has been shaky, highlighted by their struggles against Sri Lanka's spinners in the recent Test series. A more formidable spin challenge lies ahead in India. While Bengaluru might offer a less hostile pitch for spinners, they are pitted against an Indian side that seems unbeatable at home, having secured 18 straight Test series wins. Given the context of the WTC final qualification, we anticipate India will be highly motivated, making them our favored team to win this Test.

India are favorites to win this Test match.
