Western Australia drew their first match against Queensland at Perth. In a high-scoring game, they posted scores of 465 and 2636 (dec.) but could not take enough wickets to secure a win on a flat surface. However, they would be happy that many of their premier batters - Sam Whiteman (102), Josh Inglis (122 and 48), and Mitchell Marsh (94) – got some valuable runs.
The defending champions will also expect solid efforts from Cameron Bancroft, Hilton Cartwright, and Jayden Goodwin.
The bowling attack is going to rely on Matt Kelly, Cameron Gannon, and Brody Couch to do the heavy lifting. Offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli has been a key figure for Western Australia over the years and his experience will be handy on this dry surface.

Last season's finalists Tasmania, too started their season with a drawn affair against Queensland at the Junction Oval. They got to bat only once in the match, and went on to amass a colossal 527-9 (dec). Beau Webster (113) and Bradley Hope (111) were the top-scorers for the team. Captain Jordan Silk too pitched in with a valuable 84.
Last season, Webster and Silk led the batting unit throughout the season and it looks like the two batters have continued that form to 2024.
Another batter to watch out for is Charlie Wakim, who piled on 679 runs last season at an average of 32.33.
Tasmania’s bowling attack remains their strong suit. The inclusion of Test spinner Matt Kuhnemann has bolstered their attack significantly. Then they also have Gabe Bell and Lawrence Neil-Smith to rely on.

Once known as the fastest pitch in the world, the W.A.C.A. Ground in Perth nowadays usually offers a pretty flat surface in domestic games. The deck still has good bounce and carry, but there is very little movement on offer. Batters will enjoy their time here on the first couple of days. Seamers will get some help in the last two days, but the pitch is unlikely to change much.
The weather in Perth will be a little cloudy and breezy on the first day, but will remain sunny and pleasant on the remaining three days.
The first match of the Sheffield Shield 2024-25 season played at the W.A.C.A. Ground turned out to be a high-scoring draw. Batting first, Western Australia posted 465 on the board. In reply, Queensland were bowled out for 367. Western Australia then declared their second innings on 263-6 and in reply Queensland made 12-2 before the match was drawn. Expect another flat surface in this match.
Both teams will be looking to bat first, as the conditions are likely to be great for batting on the first two days.
In their last five encounters in the Sheffield Shield, Western Australia remain unbeaten against Tasmania. They have won three of those encounters and drawn two. This time too, the defending champions look very strong and have assembled an international quality side. Tasmania is no slouch either and are ready to give a tough fight. However, on paper, Western Australia have a slight advantage. Considering the expectation of another flat pitch, it’s likely this match will either end in a draw or see Western Australia emerge victorious.
We are backing Western Australia as the winners of this match.
