The inaugural edition of T20 Spring Challenge is drawing to a close, and we have two deserving teams in the final: Brisbane Heat Women and Hobart Hurricanes Women. These two teams didn’t get to meet each other in the group stages and that sets up an interesting final.
Brisbane Heat ed a massive victory to confirm their berth in the grand finale, whereas, Hobart Hurricanes qualified for the final despite being level with Melbourne Stars on points. The second semi-final was washed out and the team from Hobart made it through to the final on of them being a fraction ahead of Melbourne Stars women on the NRR. But the big question is will they make it count?
With the trophy on the line, can the girls from Hobart compete against a rampant Brisbane Heat side that’s almost won all the matches in the competition?

Brisbane Heat has been dominant right from the outset, defeating Sydney Thunder at the North Sydney Oval by 9 wickets.
Although they did stutter a bit against the other Sydney franchise, Sixers, and ended up with a defeat by a fine margin, they did bounce back in style with a thumping victory against Australian Capital Territory. They backed it up with another victory at the Karen Rolton Oval against hosts Adelaide Strikers, when they tracked down 176 relatively easily with an over and 4 wickets to spare.
And they drew Adelaide Strikers for a semi-final showdown and came out demolishing them with a huge 38-run victory. Their 3-run loss against Sixers was a minor blip in the radar, but otherwise things have been going really smoothly for the Brisbane Heat women, who now have now set their sights on claiming the inaugural T20 spring challenge.
Georgia Redmayne has hit a purple patch, scoring 195 runs off 4 games at an impressive strike rate of 154 and a solid average of 39. She’ll be hoping to light things up in the final and carry the good form straight into the WBBL.
Nicola Hancock with 9 scalps from 5 matches has led the bowling attack superbly for Brisbane Heat and she’ll be keen on taking control in the big final.

Hobart Hurricanes are counting their lucky stars today after scraping through to the finals ahead of Melbourne Stars women.
A defeat in the opener to Melbourne Renegades at Karen Rolton Oval wasn’t ideal, but they showed that they have what it takes to spring a comeback. They took on Adelaide Strikers and Perth Scorchers at the same venue, and ended up on the winning side. After their bowlers strangled the opposition, restricting them to below par totals, their openers took charge of the chase.
Chasing 138 for a win against Strikers, Lizelle Lee, literally, brought up an electric hundred in record time, scoring the bulk of the runs — roughly 80% of 141. Ruth Johnston carried the team on her shoulders against Perth Scorchers, finishing with a solid 50 to see off the chase along with Elyse Vilani in the middle.
And they completed a hat trick of victories against ACT meteors, not before limping their way to a victory pursuing a less than par total.
Even in the washed-out semi-final, they raced off to a good start but quickly lost their way before Nicola Carey put the anchor down and scored an impressive 77 to take her side through to a formidable total. Carey has bowled with intent and collected 5 wickets in the tournament, lending a good hand to Molly Strano, the lead bowler.

The Cricket Central pitch has flattened out and become much more enjoyable for batters over the course of the competition. Both teams made at least 160 batting first, and would be eyeing a similar score in the finals. The highest score by a team batting first is 183 and 143 is the best effort by a team chasing. Bowlers have reaped rewards of sticking to their line and length here. All in all, it makes for a good sporting wicket where there’s a good contest between bat and ball. A wash-out in the semi-final has stoked concerns of rain intervening in the final, but the weather forecast suggests that rain intervention will be unlikely.
Cricket Central in Sydney will host the big final. Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes have won a match each here.
Although chasing has been the #1 choice for most teams this season, having runs on the board makes all the difference in the final. The toss winning captain would most likely opt to bnat first, get to a more than par score, and let the scoreboard pressure get to the chasing team.
Brisbane Heat have been the form team of the tournament and they’ve picked up wins both chasing and winning. We reckon they’ll prevail over Hobart Hurricanes in the final and lift the inaugural T20 Spring Challenge trophy.
We are backing Brisbane Heat as winners of this contest.
