Yorkshire Vikings are all set to begin their T20 Blast 2024 campaign at home. The last time they played Worcestershire Rapids at Headingley, Dawid Malan, and James Wharton led the hosts to a 200+ runs total batting first.
Jordan Thompson’s 4-fer helped the Vikings win by 24 runs. However, when these two teams locked horns at New Road in Worcester, the Rapids emerged victorious in a close encounter that went right down the wire.
There may be a few major changes to the squads of both sides given the T20 World Cup is around and players like David Wiese, and Jonny Bairstow will not be available for Yorkshire.
Dawid Malan didn’t make it to the England squad for the T20 World Cup and will be available for the T20 Blast 2024. For Worcestershire Rapids, it is Michael Bracewell who has ed the New Zealand squad for the World Cup and won’t be available for this game.
The venue is great for T20 cricket and has witnessed many competitive matches. And we expect a lot of runs to be scored in the 1st match of the season at Headingley.

Yorkshire Vikings had a strong overall squad last season but failed to make it to the quarter-finals. They had a decent record at this venue including a win against Worcestershire Rapids.
Shan Masood was the captain and the likes of Adam Lyth and Dawid Malan were among the key players in the batting department. It needs to be seen whether the Vikings stick with just one wicket-keeper batsman in Jonathan Tattersall or bring in another one.
Yorkshire beat Worcestershire on this ground last year. And they should be confident starting their 2024 T20 Blast campaign here. They’ve got plenty of experience in their squad and some young blood as well.
They’ve also got the experienced Joe Root while they will be missing Harry Brook who s England for the T20 World Cup. Adam Lyth and James Wharton will be crucial in the top 3 along with the experienced Dawid Malan, who was once the number 1 T20 batter in the world.
Shan Masood can be seen leading the Vikings. In the middle-order, there are the likes of Masood, Jordan Thompson, and Tattersall. Wicket-keeper batter Donovan Ferreira has played around the world in franchise cricket and can be a great finisher for the side.
In addition to Thompson, we expect the likes of Dom Bess and Matthew Revis to lead the bowling attack for Yorkshire.

Rapids were a couple of places ahead of Yorkshire in the points table last season as they made it to the quarter-finals of the 2023 T20 Blast. However, it was an anti-climactic end to their campaign as Worcestershire were bowled out for just 100 runs in the Quarter-Final.
Even with the likes of Adam Hose, Mitchell Santner, and Brett DOliviera in the lineup, the Rapids couldn’t contain their batting collapse. Santner, who played at number 3 for the Rapids last year will not be available for this match as he s the New Zealand squad for the T20 World Cup.
Jack Haynes and Adam Hose were the key players in Worcestershire’s 2-wicket win over the Vikings at New Road last year as they successfully chased down a 176-run target.
Wicket-keeper batsman Gareth Roderick is another key figure in this batting lineup to watch out for. He was quite impressive in the County Championship and should play a crucial role in the middle order.
Last year we saw Kashif Ali, Ben Cox, and Ed Pollock in the lower-middle order scoring consistently for Worcestershire. These three will be the ones to watch out for in this game should they make it to the XI.
There are some promising bowlers in the Worcestershire squad such as Ben Gibson, Josh Baker, Nathan Smith, and Usama Mir. It needs to be seen who among these will make it to the T20 squad of the Rapids.
Mir was quite influential in the last season and should be one to watch out for. Other major figures in this bowling attack include Dillon Pennington, Matthew Waite, and Patrick Brown.

Yorkshire will take on Worcestershire in their opening game of the T20 Blast at Headingley in Leeds. It is a batting-friendly venue where team batting first can easily cross the 185-run mark. Even 200 runs may not be a safe total here considering the conditions and the batting strengths of both squads.
It is a great venue for batting and there are plenty of runs on offer for the team batting first. We reckon both skippers will be keen on batting first if they win the toss. Having runs on the board will always be an advantage at Headingley.
Both teams have solid batters in their squads and have been impressive in the last season. Yorkshire boast of a great home record and should have the home advantage in this match. It will be a close encounter between two equally matched sides with Yorkshire starting with a slight edge over the visitors. As a result, Yorkshire Vikings will start as favorites in our match prediction.
