Bangladesh is gearing up for the T20 World Cup in June by hosting Asian counterparts Sri Lanka for a three-match T20I series tomorrow.
Bangladesh managed to draw their recent T20 series against the Kiwis 1-1 over in New Zealand, while the Lankans dominated the T20I series against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan at home. Bangladesh’s track record against Sri Lanka has been disappointing: they met each other five teams of which they lost 4 and won only one.
The make-up and fortunes of both teams have changed drastically, so this contest should not be a mismatch as the numbers suggest. Interestingly, Bangladesh have done well in Sri Lanka, winning 3 of the 5 encounters they have had over the years. Some key players are missing in action in the series and that’ll have an impact on the matchups and the result of this fixture.

A new-look Bangladesh squad has been assembled for the Sri Lankan series, with veteran low order batter Mahmudullah coming back to the fold after a long time.
A 1-1 tied T20I series against New Zealand in New Zealand didn’t encourage the selectors to give some of the struggling incumbents a long rope. The squad selection process has seen a few regular being cast out namely Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Shamim Hossain and Afif Hossain. Najmul Hossain Shanto, after a poor BPL season, is entrusted with the captaincy. Anamul Haque, Soumya Sarkar and Liton Das are the top-order options with the bat.
The middle order has plenty of options namely Mohd. Naim, Towhid Hridoy and the captain himself. The bowling attack comprises of Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Taijul Islam, and Tanzim Hasan. Taskin Ahmed, the fiery pacer, is back in the mix as well. The composition of the backroom staff has undergone a big change, with David Hemp replacing Jamie Siddons as batting coast and Andre Adams stepping in as bowling coach instead of Allan Donald.

Suspended for showing his dissent against an umpiring decision and his run-in with an umpire, Wanindu Hasaranga will be missing in action for the two matches.
Charith Asalanka, has been handed the captaincy and will take the reins for the first two encounters of the series. Pathum Nissanka misses out with an injury he picked up in the Afghanistan series, so Avishka Fernando will be taking his place at the top. Fernando has got the nod on the back of good ODI form, where he scored 91 and 88 in two of the three games. He last featured in a T20I for Sri Lanka in January last year, and has been in and out of the team owing to indifferent form and injury issues.
Similarly, Jeffrey Vandersay, who last featured in a T20I two years ago, has been called up to the squad. Angelo Mathews, Dashun Shanaka, and Dhananjaya de Silva are the all-rounders in the squad, which is also packed with a well-rounded bowling attack. Slingers Nuwan Thushara and Matheesha Pathirana, spinners Maheesh Theekshana and Akila Dananjaya round out a versatile bowling attack that can perform under any conditions.

The deck at this venue has been ideal for batting. The local team folded for paltry scores- 78 runs and 85 runs- while chasing. The overall average of the recent matches are not too big either, with anything above 160 a more than challenging score to chase. The weather forecast is fine.
This night fixture between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will be played at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Sylhet. These teams have met each other at this venue once six years ago, when Sri Lanka smashed 210 from their full 20 overs overs and skittled out the hosts for 135 to seal a 75-run victory.
Chasing was the obvious choice for teams that had most success at Sylhet in the recently concluded BPL. We reckon that the team winning the toss to chase would mostly choose to bat second.
Sri Lanka have found Bangladesh a great place to play T20I cricket, having picked up victories in 4 out of 5 matches here. We guess that Sri Lanka will stave off any fight from the home team and go on to win this match.
We are backing Sri Lanka as the winners of this contest.
