After a dominant display against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Square Kings are ready for another battle in their backyard – this time with a resurgent Punjab Kings side that pulled off a herculean chase against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.
The Kings, having lost four of their five matches, braved all odds to put on a scintillating batting display to track down KKR’s humungous target with more than an over to spare. They may be meandering down the bottom half of the table, but they’ll certainly fancy taking on Chennai Super Kings- a team they have gotten the better of four times in five encounters.
Yes, you read it right. CSK haven’t been able to beat Punjab Kings in the most recent four matches, with their last victory coming in IPL 2021, a good three seasons ago. Chennai looked too strong for SRH the other day, but they won’t take Kings lightly. As a result, this promises to be an exciting clash in all ways.

Chennai Super Kings have developed their own blueprint to dominate visiting teams this season. Without getting into a hitting frenzy during the powerplay, they set out to build a proper base. Ruturaj Gaikwad, with scores of 108 and 98 in his last two hits, commits to batting deep while the likes of Shivam Dube, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni bat around him to give impetus to their batting innings so they get to an above-par total.
With totals like 210 and 212, CSK seem more threatening. After an off-game against LSG, CSK bowlers bounced back with a bang to complete a crushing 78-run win over SRH. Tushar Deshpande, in particular, floored SRH by nabbing three of their attacking batsmen inside the powerplay. He may not have gone on to pick up a five-for, but he bowled superbly up front to peg SRH back and pretty much sealed the fate of the match in the first half of the chase.
The rest of the bowling group ed him well, with Ravindra Jadeja and Mustafizur Rahman in particular choking batsmen like Klaasen when he was looking to take the attack to the bowlers.
Daryl Mitchell provided a safe pair of hands completing 5 catches on the outfield, after a fine fifty in the first innings. He’ll be expected to play a similar role in this contest.
The yorker king of CSK, Matheesha Pathirana has been nailing toe crushing Yorkers and has picked up wickets at key moments for the Super Kings this season. He has been the go to bowler in the death overs and with batsman trying to score runs, Pathirana always has the better chance of picking up more wickets. He has picked up a minimum of two wickets per match in three of the last four matches and we back him to produce another match winning spell and pick up two or more wickets in todays match.
The captain of Chennai Super Kings has been on fire scoring runs at a consistent rate this season and especially at Chennai he has been unstoppable. He has scored 98, 108*, 67* in his last three innings at Chennai and overall he has amassed 447 runs in 9 matches averaging 63.86, given his current form and record at Chennai, we back Ruturaj Gaikwad to score over 33.5 runs in today's match.

Punjab Kings wouldn’t make too much of how CSK strangled the explosive SRH batting line up with a varied bowling attack. After all, chasing has been their strong suits this season. All three wins the Kings have managed this season have come in chases, and the best of the lot came last match- against all odds – versus a confident KKR side in their own backyard.
Shashank Singh’s impressive consistency has encouraged the team management to send him up the order, and the swashbuckling batsman grabbed the opportunity with both hands with a quickfire cameo. Englishman Johnny Bairstow’s tormenting run with the bat was over, and he roared back to form with a brilliant century to get his team over the line in a chase of epic proportions.
On the bowling front, Harshal Patel, fondly known as ‘Purple Patel’, has shaken off a poor start to this season with strong performances back to back. His variety and pace variation will prove to be effective on Chennai’s deck, and he holds the key for the Punjab side alongside leg spinner Rahul Chahar who impressed with an economical spell amidst the six hitting carnage giving away 8-ish runs per over in a game where around 13.5 runs per over were scored on an average.
In the last match against Kolkata Knight Riders, Shashank Singh smashed 68 runs off just 28 balls, leading his team to a record-breaking run chase. He has been Punjab Kings' most consistent batsman this season, accumulating 263 runs in nine matches, making him the leading run-scorer for the Kings in the tournament. Given his current form, we expect Shashank Singh to score over 19.5 runs in today's match.

The pitch at Chepauk has been great for run-scoring, with three two-hundreds coming in four innings. Like the SRH batsmen found during their stuttering chase in the middle, skidders, cutters and off-pace bouncers have been a little hard to score off. The conditions are expected to be warm and dry in the evening but should settle down a little in the night.

High TurnThis match is going to be played at the MA Chidambaram stadium, Chepauk. Out of the 7 matches between these teams, CSK hold the edge over Punjab Kings, with 4 wins and 3 losses. Last year, Punjab Kings batsman Sikandar Raza pinched 3 runs off the last ball of the final over to complete an incredible chase of 201 in a nervy finish.
The average aggregate score in the last five IPL matches played at Chennai this season is 349 runs. It hasnt been a high scoring ground and bowlers have always had the upperhand over the batsman at this venue and with the pitch expected to favour the spinners, we predict the total score to be under 366.5 runs.
CSK will be hoping to win toss, bat first and put a huge total on board to put the Punjab Kings batsmen under the pump. Punjab Kings wouldn’t mind chasing, though, after having pulled off the highest chase ever in a T20 contest just a few days earlier.
The loss against LSG came down as a shock to CSK, but the men in yellow showed why they’re the defending champions with an incredible bounce-back win over the form team of the tournament. They should see off the Punjab threat with another dominating performance.
We are backing Chennai Super Kings as winners of this contest.
