It does feel like a do or die match when it comes to Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans, given where they are on the points table. Teetering at the bottom, these teams have managed just 2 wins (Punjab) and 3 wins (Gujarat) from 7 games so far.
Bouncing back from this position to go on to qualify for the playoffs is an uphill task. Both teams have been very poor in executing their skills and have been found wanting more often than not with the ball and the bat.
They haven’t been able to produce the complete game. Gujarat’s clearly lacking the champion mentality and the play-as-a-group character that they’ve shown in previous seasons.
And, for a team that boats of an incredible bench strength, Punjab is not able to play to potential. These teams have met each other four times so far, and the head-to-head stands at 2-2 all now.
Who’ll pull away and take the lead with a win this match?
That’s the big question.

Punjab Kings batting group, especially the top order, has failed them in the first of the half of the tournament. With Dhawan missing in action due to a shoulder injury and Bairstow horribly out of form, Kings needed a fresh opening pair.
They tested Atharva Taide in the previous game, and, the ploy backfired. Rilee Rossouw, replacing Bairstow, couldn’t do his reputation any good in his first match of the season either. Liam Livingstone had yet another disappointing hit with the bat.
And it came back to Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma to do the tidying up job. And they obliged. The two have been brilliant with scoring runs in the late order, and they can’t afford to take it easy considering how their wafer-thin top and middle order are performing.
On the bowling front, Arshdeep Singh’s inconsistency is not helping Punjab Kings at all. With Harshal Patel and Sam Curran not having a profound impact on restricting opposition batsmen or picking wickets, Arshdeep and Rabada are having to bowl under pressure. And it tells in their patchy performance. Harpreet Brar is offering some control through the middle overs, but lack of wickets is a serious challenge that he needs to overcome.

Gujarat Titans have been utterly disappointing with the bat this season, as demonstrated by the abysmal 89 runs they managed against DC.
Except Gill and Sudarshan, none of the other batters have been able to contribute regularly with the bat. Tewatia has managed to collect 110-odd runs so far, but the others haven’t been able to score more than 99 runs. We’re halfway through the tournament, but batsmen such as Vijay Shankar, David Miller (who was in great nick last year) have been woefully out of form.
They’ve tweaked their XI constantly but unfortunately none of their strategies worked in their favour, such as trying Williamson for Omarzai, Abhinav Manohar for Saha, and Shahrukh Khan as impact player.
Their experiments with the bowling group have not been successful either. Mohit Sharma has done decently well to pick up 8 wickets, but is still bowling within himself. Rashid Khan doesn’t look much threatening ever since he came back in to the fold from the back injury. Noor Ahmad has impressed in the limited opportunities he has got so far, but it’s still not sure why he doesn’t start in the XI.
Their ploy to bring in Sandeep Warrier for Umesh Yadav backfired. Umesh was the only bowler to have picked at least 5 wickets other than Mohit and Rashid. Gujarat Titans have made some strange decisions this season, but they still have 7 more games to make amends and still finish strong in this campaign.

The decks here aren’t exactly batting-friendly with the scores hovering anywhere between 150 and 190. Teams have struggled to get up to a total beyond 200, and whenever they have pressed to take it over 200, they’ve lost their way in the middle and had to settle for less.

Average TurnThis match is happening at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur. Having won just one out of four games here, Punjab Kings would be looking to finish their season at this venue on a high. All the four contests here so far have been too close to call, with victorious teams just scraping through narrowly. The forecast for the day is for bright sunshine, but we expect the temperatures to drop down a bit at night.
The pattern is quite evident. The toss winning captain has only chosen to bat second. Opting to chase- to make the most of the dewy conditions- has proved counterproductive in a couple of occasions when the team being put in to bat first (SRH and MI) defended their total successfully in the end.
Our money is on Punjab Kings. They came close to winning the match against MI after seeing off the early jitters thanks to Ashutosh and Shashank. And we reckon the duo will come good and take Punjab Kings to a winning position.
We are backing Punjab Kings as winners of this contest.
