After whitewashing South Africa Women in the ODI series followed by a record-breaking 10-wicket win in a one-off Test, India Women are all geared to take on the visitors in the shortest game format. The first T20I of the three-match series will be played at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on 5th July from 7 pm onwards. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur will be all charged up to give another whitewash to SA Women.
India Women started the season with a 3-0 victory in the ODI series against the visitors. Smriti Mandhana topped the run chart with 343 runs at an average of 114.33. She scored two centuries and a half-century in the series. SA Women’s Laura Wolvadaart ended the series with 200 runs at an average of 100. Indian spinner Deepti Sharma was the leading wicket-taker of the series with 6 wickets at an economy of 3.57 - the lowest amongst all.
After the ODI series, both teams played a one-off test. India Women openers Mandana (149) & Shafali Verma (205) scored a record-breaking partnership of 292 in the first innings. India Women declared the innings on 603 for the loss of 6 wickets. Spinner Sneh Rana dismantled the SA batting lineup by claiming 8 wickets. Following on by 337 runs in the second innings, SA skipper Wolvadaart scored a century (122) with partner Sunne Luss (109). India Women chased the target of 36 without losing a wicket to keep the unbeaten record alive.
The T20I series will be a comeback option for SA women. When both teams played the format last time back in 2023, SA Women won the game by 5 wickets following Chloe Tryon’s 57 off 32 balls in the middle-order. Though India Women have won the ODI & Test series, T20I series will be a tough test for them.

Her partner has 472 runs in 22 innings during the same period. Daylan Hemalatha will come at number three. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur will come in the middle with Richa Ghosh and Jemimah Rodrigues. Kaur scored 105 runs in the 5-match T20I series against Bangladesh earlier at a strike rate of 130. Richa Ghosh will be playing the role of an anchor in the middle. Ghosh has 333 runs in 16 T20I since 2023 at a strike rate of 134.27. Jemimah Rodrigues also has 400-plus runs since the last year for India Women.
Deepti Sharma will lead the bowling attack with Radha Yadav. Sharma has 31 wickets since 2023 at an average of 5.60. She also has 13 wickets in 11 games played against the SA Women. It will be a litmus test for SA Women. Skipper Laura Wolvadaart will be hoping for her squad to bounce back from back-to-back losses against the hosts. she will open the innings with Tazmin Brits. Wolvadaart has 833 runs in the last 21 T20I innings at an average of 49 including a century and 7 half-centuries. Brits also have 618 runs in the same innings at a strike rate of 109.96. Unfortunately, their strike rate against India Women is below 100. Marizanne Kapp will come at number three. Kapp has been brilliant with the bat since the start of last year with 385 runs in 15 innings.
Sune Luss will bat in the middle-order with Anneke Bosch & Nadine de Klerk. Luss is the leading run-scorer from SA against India in the current squad. In 14 innings against the hosts, Luss has 308 runs. Nadine de Klerk who scored 44 off 25 in the last T20I against Sri Lanka is having a fabulous run with the ball claiming 10 wickets in the last 10 games at a strike rate of 14.5. South African women should think of playing Chloe Tryon in 11. Tryon scored a half-century in SA’s last outing against India. Her record against the host is terrific. In 7 innings, Tryon has scored 191 runs at a strike rate of 180.18 - the highest among the all.
The underperforming bowling unit will be a headache for the skipper. Nonkululeko Mlaba will lead the bowling unit with Masabata Klaas. Mlaba has 20 wickets in the last 16 games at an economy of 6.07. On the other hand, Klass has 9 wickets in the last 9 games. Marizanne Kapp will have a huge load on her shoulders to Mlaba & Klaas. Kaap has 15 wickets in the last 18 innings. The weather will be cloudy and humid. Thunderstorms are predicted on 5th July The temperatures will be between 27°C and 34°C. It’s a slightly windy day with a 100% chance of rain.
Traditionally, the pitch is known for being slow and low, offering significant assistance to spinners as the game progresses. The surface tends to dry out quickly, creating cracks that aid spin bowlers in extracting turn and bounce. Batsmen may find it easier to score during the initial phase of the game when the pitch is fresh and hard.

The venue is home to Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. The ground was established in 1916, making it the oldest venue in India which is in continuous use.
The first innings has been the most productive with bat at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. The average first innings score is 150. In fact, in 6 games played here, 5 have been won by the team batting first. The team winning the toss should bat first here.
There is a high chance that the rain will wash the game. But in case, we get a full game, the hosts are a mile ahead of the visitors. The unbeaten run in ODI & Test series has given them a boost. Besides this, Mandhana is in form. After guiding her team to win the maiden IPL, she has been terrific with the bat in all formats.
SA has just two wins in the last 6 T20Is. If India manages to send Wolvadaart back to the pavilion early, it will be a one-sided affair.
We predict that India Women will defeat South Africa Women.
