The 16th match of IPL 2025 will see Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Mumbai Indians (MI) battle it out on Thursday in Lucknow. Neither team has been at their best so far, with just one win in three games. LSG endured a rough loss in their last home fixture, which could have shaken them a bit. MI, on the other hand, finally picked up their first victory and will be looking to build on that by pushing LSG to the limit.

After a dominant win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in their second match, Lucknow Super Giants seemed to have found their rhythm. But their momentum took a hit when Punjab Kings handed them a crushing eight-wicket defeat at home, dropping them to sixth in the standings.
Batting first on a good surface at Ekana, LSG could only manage 171-7, a total that Punjab chased with ease in just 16.2 overs. The loss exposed some gaps in their squad, particularly in the batting lineup. Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran have been carrying most of the burden, and when one of them fails, the rest of the unit struggles to step up. This was evident in the previous game, where Pooran couldn’t deliver, and LSG paid the price.
Pooran has been Lucknow’s most dependable batter over the past two seasons, consistently delivering quickfire knocks. His last six innings include scores like 48*(26), 61 (27), 75 (29), and 70 (26), proving how crucial he is to the team. Expect another solid 30+ run effort from him at a strike rate well above 150.
Rishabh Pant’s form remains a concern. Three single-digit scores have put extra pressure on the middle order, and David Miller’s struggles haven’t helped either. He hasn’t been timing the ball well and has looked far from his best.
One positive for LSG was the lower order stepping up, with Ayush Badoni (41 off 33) and Abdul Samad (27 off 12) playing valuable knocks. Their performances will give the team some confidence moving forward.
On the bowling side, Shardul Thakur has been the main wicket-taker with six scalps in three games. However, an economy rate of 10.22 shows that he’s also been expensive. The good news for Lucknow is that Akash Deep is expected to be available for the next match against Mumbai, strengthening their injury-hit bowling attack.
Ravi Bishnoi’s struggles will be another concern for the team, as the leg-spinner has picked up just three wickets while conceding runs at 12.34 per over. On a more positive note, Digvesh Singh Rathi has been a strong addition, taking five wickets in three games while keeping his economy at a respectable 8.41.
Pooran has smashed 15 sixes in three matches, averaging 5 sixes per match this season. His ability to hit maximums to both fast and spin bowlers makes him one of the best T20 batters. Given his current form, we back the southpaw to deposit more than one six into the stands against Mumbai Indians.
Pant is struggling to get his timing right and hasn't hit a single boundary this season. In three matches he has scored 15 runs. Given his current form, we predict Pant to have another tough outing and predict him to hit under 2.5 4's.
Markram scored 28 runs in the last match against Punjab Kings. He has had couple of good starts and has amassed 44 runs in 3 matches. We back Markram to come out all guns blazing and play an impactul knock and score over 22 runs against the lethal bowling lineup of MI.
Pooran has scored over 40 runs in all the three matches played this season, at Lucknow he has scored 261 runs in 15 matches. Against Mumbai Indians, Pooran has scored 205 runs in 9 matches, averaging 34.16 and striking at 176.72.

Mumbai Indians finally got their first win of the season after back-to-back losses, delivering a commanding performance against Kolkata Knight Riders at home. Their bowlers set the tone early, rolling KKR out for just 117 on a batting-friendly Wankhede track. The chase was a walk in the park, with MI getting the job done in just 12.5 overs.
Ryan Rickelton led the charge with a flawless 62* off 41, while Suryakumar Yadav chipped in with a blistering 27 off just 9. Surya has now racked up 104 runs in three games at a rapid strike rate of 165.
Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya bring balance to the middle order and can shift gears when needed. There’s also Naman Dhir, along with all-rounders Mitchell Santner and Deepak Chahar, who give MI added batting depth.
Chahar has stood out with the ball, taking four wickets in three games at 9.50. He shares the new-ball duties with Trent Boult, who is always a threat in the powerplay. Santner’s control in the middle overs will be key, while the young and promising Vignesh Puthur will be looked at for breakthroughs. Another player to keep an eye on is Ashwani Kumar. He made a dream debut last game, picking up 4-24 in just three overs. If he keeps this up, he could be MI’s X-factor this season.
The elegant left hander after couple of unlucky dimissals in the first two matches, made up with an unbeaten half century (62* runs) against Kolkata Knight Riders. Rickelton flourishes on surfaces that are bit sticky and we back him to come good in today's match against LSG.

The surface at Ekana Cricket Stadium won’t be the kind where batters can go all out from the start, but it should still offer plenty of scoring opportunities. As the game progresses, the pitch tends to lose some pace, making spin a bigger factor in the middle overs. Batting usually gets smoother in the second innings, thanks to the dew that helps the ball come onto the bat better.
Lucknow’s weather will be warm and humid, but with no rain expected, there shouldn't be any interruptions to the game.

Average TurnEkana Cricket Stadium typically sees first innings scores around 166. During last season's IPL, Kolkata Knight Riders set the highest total at this ground with 235-6 against Lucknow Super Giants, cruising to a 98-run victory. Interestingly, that remained the only 200+ score in 14 innings throughout IPL 2024. Judging by the opening match at Ekana in IPL 2025, teams will want to aim for 190-200 runs to feel comfortable defending their total.
We back the visitors Mumbai Indians to win the coin toss in match 16 of TATA IPL 2025.
The Total match score in the previous match played at Lucknow was 348. The surface at Lucknow offers a balanced track, where bowlers are in the game and is not an easy scoring surface. We predict today's match to be moderate scoring and predict the total match score to be under 354 runs.
Chasing will be the better option at the Ekana Cricket Stadium as batting becomes easier in the second innings when dew sets in. This is exactly what happened in the last game played here as Punjab Kings chased down a target of 172 in just 16.2 overs against LSG.
Lucknow Super Giants have had Mumbai Indians’ number in the IPL, winning five of their six encounters. That record might suggest LSG are the favorites, but MI enter this match with momentum after a convincing win. Their bowling attack is well-rounded, packed with options that can break partnerships, while their batting lineup is finding its rhythm. LSG, on the other hand, lean heavily on their overseas stars to deliver with the bat. Their bowling unit has looked vulnerable when Shardul Thakur fails to strike early. Given the conditions, MI seem better placed for a win in this match, unless Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran produce a big innings.
We are backing Mumbai Indians as the winners of this clash.
