3 months after Pakistan toured New Zealand to take part in a T20 series, it’s New Zealand’s turn to return the favour: head up to Pakistan for a 5-match T20 series.
Since the beginning of this decade, New Zealand and Pakistan have met each other 18 times in this format, 15 of which have come in the last 3 years alone. It’s not unusual to think that playing as many games in such a short span would have helped these teams get familiar with each other.
With 9 frontline Kiwi players deciding to honour their IPL commitments and a few others in the contracted list away on county stints, NZ have had to send an inexperienced and young squad over to the Indian subcontinent for this tour.
And that means that familiarity won’t be a factor anymore.
With the likes of Mohammed Amir and Imad Wasim coming back into the fold and Naseem Shah returning after a long injury layoff, the Pakistan bowling stocks appear much more threatening. Leggie Shadab Khan has been battling lack of form with the ball in hand for a season or two now. However, luckily for Pakistan, the returning left arm spinner Imad Wasim, who can send down a couple of overs in the powerplay, adds a bit of variety and depth to the attack.
With the all-round options they’ve got, it won’t be a bit of a stretch to imagine Pakistan using as many as six or seven bowlers (with 4 of them spinners) to bowl their quota of overs. As far as batting goes, the Pakistan attack is loaded with ammunition from head to tail. Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, and Mohd. Rizwan up top offer stability and firepower.
A strong middle order comprising of Shadab Khan, Usman Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed can pose plenty of problems to New Zealand’s inexperienced attack. On the captaincy front, Babar Azam has been reinstated as skipper under controversial circumstances. Reports suggest that Shaheen Shah Afridi never offered to step down and was stripped off his captaincy.
Such an ouster typically disturbs the rhythm of a player, so it remains to be seen how the left arm pacer comes through this stressful episode and goes about his job of leading the Pakistani bowling attack.

With 9 first-choice players opting to play the IPL, New Zealand had to send out a second-string team for this 5-match T20 series. Michael Bracewell, one of the senior of the traveling group, has been entrusted with captaincy. It’s a bit hard to reason with that decision, seeing they could have gone with one of those experienced campaigners in the squad namely Ish Sodhi, Jimmy Neesham, and Mark Chapman.
Besides, Bracewell just returned to competitive cricket after a long injury layoff through the Plunket Shield and he didn’t get to participate in the domestic T20 competition super smash either. Half the side taking the field on Rawalpindi in the first match will be young and inexperienced in foreign conditions.
Only Ben Lister of the current lot got to play three matches last year when New Zealand came visiting. Jacob Duffy and William O Rourke, however, were impressive in the home season and will be looking to carry that form through to this series. With some key batters missing in action, the squad looks a bit lighter on batting stocks so there is a strong chance that the team management will bring in several all-rounders such as the likes of Josh Clarkson, Cole McConchie.

The surface at Rawalpindi have been batting-friendly for the most part. Even though the recent international matches haven’t seen a single score upwards of 200, the recently concluded PSL is proof that the flat pitches here have been conducive to batting with that famous match featuring Multan Sultans and Islamabad United where 460-runs were aggregated in 40 overs. The weather forecast for the match is fine, and we should have a complete game with no rain-interruption.

Average TurnThe first three matches of this series will be played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi. Last year, New Zealand won the only result-bearing match here with 6 wickets to spare.
Historically, this game has been favouring the chasing team. In all likelihood, the captain winning the coin toss would choose to field first to take advantage of the conditions in the second inning.
Our money is on Pakistan. Compared to the New Zealand squad, Pakistan’s squad has much better depth and versatility to come good on any wicket and deliver under pressure even in challenging conditions.
