The most anticipated semi-final of the Vitality Blast 2024 is just a day away. Defending Champions Somerset will be sweating over Tom Banton’s twisted ankle which he sustained during the football warm-up. The first semi-final will be played between Somerset and Surrey at Edgbaston, Birmingham on 14th September from 3:30 pm onwards.
Surrey played Durham in the quarterfinal at Kennington Oval, London. Bowling first Surrey restricted Durham to 162 for the loss of 8 wickets. Daniel Worrall and Reece Topley took two wickets each for Surrey. Dominic Sibley (67) and Sam Curran (52) put up a partnership of 95 runs for the fourth wicket to win the game by 5 wickets.
Somerset started their quarter-final with a bang against Northamptonshire. Batting first, somerset scored 215 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Tom Banton (75) put up a partnership of 125 runs with Tom Kohler-Core (63) for the second wicket. The duo hit 5 sixes each. Skipper Lewis Gregory then took three wickets for 35 runs to help his team win the game by 17 runs to reach to the semis for the consecutive time.
Both teams played two games against each other in the group stage games. In the first game, surrey had the upper hand. Wicket-keeper Jamie Smith’s 87 off 38 proved enough for them to win the game by 57 runs. Somerset then took revenge in the second game despite half-centuries from Surrey’s Rory Burns and Sam Curran. Somerset won the game by 6 wickets and an over in hand.

Surrey will be happy with the news of Tom Banton getting injured. But they will not be sleeping over this. In the absence of Will Jacks, Dan Lawrence will open the batting alongside Dominic Sibley. Lawrence has scored 106 runs and picked up 10 wickets in 9 matches. He has been a vital cog in the group stage matches for Surrey.. On the other hand, Sibley has 221 runs in 10 games. Sibley scored a half-century in the quarter-final to help Surrey reach to the semis. Laurie Evans will come at number three. In 14 games, Evans has scored 257 runs without hitting a half-century.
Jamie Smith returns to the squad and he is likely to bat at number 4, having scored 285 runs in 8 matches, Smith provides the much needed fire power that Surrey needs in the middle order. His brother Tom will play the role of an all-rounder. Tom is the leading wicket-taker from Surrey with 15 wickets at an average of 13.06. Overton had scored 30 off 13 in Surrey’s defeat against Somerset in the group stage.
Daniel Worrall and Chris Jordan are the key bowlers for Surrey in this fixture. The unavailability of Sam Curran and Reece Topley leaves Surrey with limited bowling options. Jordan Clark and Cameron Steel are the likely replacements who are expected to make the final XI.
Key Players: Jamie Smith, Chris Jordan, Tom Curran
Sibley played a crucial role in the quarterfinal match against Durham, scoring a brilliant half-century of 67 runs from 48 balls. His recent scores have been impressive, with 67, 18, and 27 runs in his last three innings. Against Somerset, he has scored 104 runs in 4 matches, averaging 34.70. Based on his current form, we back Sibley to score over 19.5 runs in today's match.

Somerset will face an anxious wait to figure out whether Tom Banton will get fit for the semi. Banton is their leading run-scorer with 515 runs at a strike rate of 151.02. He has hit 4 half-centuries including the one in the quarter-final. Will Smead will open the innings at the other end. He has 252 runs in 10 games at a strike rate of 183.94 - the highest among the Somerset batters. Tom Kohler-Core will come at number three. He will be the batter to watch out for if Banton misses the game. Kohler-Core has 365 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 141.47.
Tom Abell will come in the middle with Sean Dickson and L Gregory. Abell has 326 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 144.88. Dickson played a crucial inning of 30 off 13 balls in the quarter-final. He has a trike rate of 160 this season. Skipper Lewis Gregory has 176 runs with the bat at a strike rate of 176.40. The all-rounder also has 16 wickets with the ball at an economy of 8.25.
Ben Green will lead the bowling attack with Gregory, Craig Overton, and Jake Ball. Green is their leading wicket-taker with 21 wickets at an average of 20.52. But his economy is above 11. Ball and Overton have taken 21 wickets combined this season. The issue with the somerset bowling is that none of them have an economy of less than 8.
Key Players: Tom Kohler-Core, Tom Abell, Ben Green
Abell's recent form in the Blast has been impressive, with scores of 29, 47, and 30 runs in his last three innings. With an average of 31 in T20 matches at Birmingham and a decent record against Surrey, he will be a key player for Somerset's success in the absence of Tom Banton. We believe Abell will score over 22.5 runs in today's match.

The weather will be cloudy and humid with a chance of rain. The temperatures will be between 7°C and 16°C.
The pitch at Edgbaston is a balanced one that favours both the batters and bowlers. In the initial stages of the game it is good for batting and as the game progresses run-scoring becomes difficult as the pitch slows down considerably.
The average total match scores in the last three matches played at Edgbaston, Birmingham is 309 runs. In the last game played at this venue the total match score was 262 runs, the pitch is expected to be balanced where a moderate scoring match is expected.
In the 9 T20 Blast matches played at this venue, the team batting first won seven games, while the team batting second won 2 games and the average 1st innings score this season is 178 runs.
Both teams are dented by the unavailability of key players for this crucial fixture. But Somerset has an edge with the ball than Surrey. At Birmingham where the conditions are in favourable to the bowlers, Somerset will fancy their chances of advancing to the finals.
We are backing Somerset to win this fixture.
