Melbourne Renegades take on Perth Scorchers in a key encounter in Melbourne in the Women’s BBL. Perth got off to a winning start, although it didn’t look convincing at all. But they’ll be happy to take the scrappy win and move on to their next challenge: Melbourne Renegades. The women in red played a couple of matches but have no points to show for it. They’d be disappointed they left two good opportunities to slip through their hands. Despite getting to a strong position in both matches, they couldn’t quite finish things well. They’ll fancy their chances of winning against the Scorchers’ whose winning start in the first game helped them avoid a five-match losing streak. Having gone down to the Scorchers in 4 out of their past 5 meetings, Renegades would be determined to prove a point and show that they’re here to compete.

Back to back losses has pushed Renegades into a tricky situation. They have not won a game in ages, and their defeat to Brisbane Heat women extended their streak to five games. Their last win came against Brisbane Heat last season, ending an 8=match losing streak.
Overall, 2 wins from 16 games is terrible, and there’s no surprise their confidence is at a low. Presence of international stars like Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin from West Indies, and Georgia Wareham and Sophie Molineux haven’t helped their cause much. They’re still struggling to pick up a win let alone stringing together a few wins to get some momentum into their campaign.
Matthews didn’t get involved in the opening encounter, but made a quick impact in her first game of the season, scoring 35 off 23 balls to lift Renegades off to a good start in pursuit of 170. Her dismissal led to a breakthrough and then to another, exposing the untested middle order. None of their bowlers have been able to show consistency in the way they bowl.
Pacer Milly Illingworth’s pace hasn’t bothered batters one bit, but spinners Alice Capsey and Georgia Wareham have shown their wares with the ball for sure. Captain Sophie Molineux hasn’t quite had any game-changing impact with both bat and ball, but it’s good to see her tightening up the strings and controlling the flow of the game in the middle overs.
Courtney Web scored 43 & 25 runs in the two innings she has played in the season. At the top of the order she has provided good starts to the Renegades. Against the Scorchers she averages close to 21 runs per game. Given her good run of form, we back Webb to score over 15.5 runs.

Scorchers' form petered out towards the business end of last year’s WBBL, and they came into this tournament with 4 straight losses. A win in the opening encounter against Stars helped them avoid a 5-match losing streak.
At the halfway mark of the match, things didn’t look great either with just 122 runs on the board. Alana King spun a web, collecting 3 wickets to turn things around for the Scorchers. She was well ed by Chloe Ainsworth who bowled economically and snared a couple of wickets. Overall the effort was a bit scratchy and the win was not that convincing either, but Scorchers will be happy to take the win and move forward.
Greater challenges await them, so they’ll be hoping to make no mistakes against teams like Renegades who’re going through a lean patch. With the tournament shortened, each win is invaluable.
It’s still early days in the competition but Scorchers will be looking to push forward with a few more wins and hope that they’ll have some momentum going into the knockouts. From a batting point of view, some of the key players are Beth Mooney up top and Chloe Piparo who played a crucial knock in the middle order to take Scorchers over the line. Bowling-wise, King and Ainsworth hold the key.
Beth Mooney loves batting against the Renegades, over the last two seasons she has scored 297 runs in five matches, which includes a hundred & 2 fifties. The southpaw scored 31 runs in her last outing showing glimpses of her form. We back Mooney to come good and score over 31.5 in today's match.
Beth Mooney (c & wk), Maddy Darke, Carly Leeson, Amy Jones, Mikayla Hinkley, Chloe Piparo, Alana King, Chloe Ainsworth, Amy Louise Edgar, Lilly Mills, Ebony Hoskin.

The pitch here assists batters a great deal. It wasn’t hard to see teams posting totals upwards of 160 on a regular basis here last season. Any total above 170 would be tough to chase down in this ground. The weather forecast for this match is clear, and we’re in for a complete match of cricket without any interruption if the forecast holds.
This match is all set to take place at the Junction Oval in Melbourne. Last time these two teams met here, Scorchers won at a canter, mowing down 134 in no time with 10 wickets in hand.
The pitch at Junction Oval favours the batters, the Renegades who on average scores 160 per game this season and the Scorchers bolster their batting lineup with the return of Sophie Devine. Both teams boast a strong batting lineup and a high scoring game is on the cards.
It’s clearly one of those ‘win toss and bat first’ venues. Last season, 8 of the 11 matches at Junction Oval, Melbourne were won by the team batting first. No prizes for guessing what captains would look to do after winning the toss.
Perth Scorchers are not in great touch, but the balance about their squad is still very much intact. They'll count on some of their players with good track record of producing match winning performances to come good against the Melbourne side. Renegades’ form is undeniably patchy at the moment, but they have the players to compete. We reckon the contest will be even-stevens but back Scorchers to walk away with the win
